Some Tips on Getting Published

If you're ready to submit to a publisher, here's what you'll need:

• A Query Letter (one page that explains who you are, what you've written, and your knowledge of their books and the romance market).

• A Synopsis or Outline (chapter by chapter or prose format of the development of your story).

• A SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope which makes replying to you convenient for the publisher)

Some editors want only the above, while others will look at the first three chapters (i.e., partial). Editors are mentioned frequently in Romantic Times' columns Editor News and Agent News. Reading these will help you learn which publishers and editors are bringing out which types of books.

If you're receiving rejection letters or feel insecure about your presentation, Romantic Times has a Manuscript Evaluation Service (made up of editors in the business) that will review your query letter, outline, partial, and/or complete manuscript to make it tighter or clearer…whatever is needed.

It isn't easy getting the attention of an editor when she has a dozen or so query letters or partials on her desk. Neatness and clarity are a MUST. Remember: Editors appreciate that you know what they're buying and publishing. How can you write effectively for them if you aren't reading their titles? Check the reviews in Romantic Times Magazine and here on the Web site to get capsule looks at ALL of their books. Feel free to call RT if you have any questions. Our Hotline: 718-237-1097.
