SIGNALLING TECHNIQUES

One of your first concerns when you find yourself lost or in a dangerous enviroment or situation is to be able to communicate with possible rescuer's

Generally, communication is the giving and receiving of information. First thing is to get your rescuer's attention, and second, send a message your rescuer understands

Some of the best methods of communication are man-made geometric patterns - straight lines, circles, triangles, or X's. A large fire or flash of light, a large bright object moving slowly or contrast, whether from colour or shadows.

The signal type used will depend on your environment and situation

  APPLICATION

First when looking to set up a communication, You will need to find the largest available clear and flat area on the highest possible terrain.

Use as obvious a signal as you can create. On the other hand, you will have to be of supply fuel or power source to feed or maintain your situation.

You do not want to set up a signal, say a fire unless you can a. Light it, b. Maintain it, c. supply it.

If you are going to set up a wide game, when practicing your skills in this area of signalling, you will need to Pick an area that is visible from the air, but ensure there are hiding places nearby. Try to have a hill or other object between the signal site and the enemy Patrols to mask your signal from them. You can only do this properly if you do a thorough reconnaissance of the area to ensure there are no enemy Patrols nearby

Whatever signalling equipment or device you plan to use, know how to use it and be ready to put it into operation on short notice. If possible, avoid using signals or signalling techniques that can physically endanger you. Keep in mind that signals to your friends/Patrol may alert the other Patrols of your presence and location

A radio (CB /Clansman/Pocket WAP phone are probably the best and quickest way to let others know where you are. Become familiar with your communications equipment . Learn how to operate them and how to send and receive messages. prearranged signalling techniques may improve your chance of rescue

REMEMBER

Like every thing you use in survival - Practice using the signalling techniques, devices, and equipment on camp and smaller expeditions, before you need them in a real emergency
