Camp Fire Yarns

When I was a scout (yes, they had scouts back in the Stone Age…), I went with a group of older scouts to an air force base to take the Air Force Air Crew Survival Training Course.  After a few days of classes on the base, we were taken out to a remote area and left in the woods.  They gave us an old condemned parachute and one days survival rations.  We set up camp, using the parachute for shelter.  We set up traps and trout-lines.   Here in the American South we have lush vegetation, so finding edible wild plants was no problem.  The problem was in the meat department.  The animals were avoiding our traps, and the fish weren’t biting our hooks.  Then a turtle walked into our campsite!  It ended up in the stew, literally!  Do you have any idea how little meat there is on a turtle?  We ate it anyway

Some years ago I was camping at the local scout camp for the weekend with some older cubs from my pack and their dads (actually it was a Webelos den).  After we finished supper, a patrol leader from a troop camping nearby came over and invited us to a wide game.  I turned to one of the dads and said, "David, I think you’d better handle this."  What this patrol leader didn’t know was that this dad had fought in Vietnam as a helicopter side door gunner;  he was shot down behind enemy lines three times, but he never was a POW because the enemy never caught him; he knew all the tricks.  Those scouts didn’t know what hit them!  After the game was over, everyone gathered around our campfire, and then I told the scouts about this dad!

Here’s one for use with the rovers.  These days much is made of "thinking outside the box."  The first submarine to successfully sink an enemy ship was the CSS Henley, during the American Civil War.  The first submarine to sink an enemy ship was not of the US Navy or the British navy or the German navy or even the Russian navy.  It was, get this, of the Confederate Army (most of crew, including the commander, were soldiers…there was one sailor and he was at the helm).  This was during the blockade of Charleston, South Carolina.  When you are in war and your country is under attack, you try all available possibilities and don’t worry about traditional labels.  In fact Charleston has never been taken by sea…the harbor defenses were too good.  The US forces had to land nearby and come around from behind

Our  thanks to : Charles. RSL.. Carolinas Christian Pathfinder Scouts

I hope all goes well with you, the Pathfinders, and RESA during the coming year 2007 !

Please take the time to read these great Yarns and let us know what you think To all Scouts -  Send in a Scouting Yarn and we will publish it Ok

Hello Kuya Ray,

Do you know the story of a Run Boy Run?  - if not so... let me tell it to you. - I like this story so much...

During the time of World War II.. Adolph Hitler, a Dictator of Germans ordered to attacked France and United Kingdom.. The 2 Countries Join together against the Allemande.. But suddenly, France was fall on the Hand of the Allemande.. Then after they Invaded the France, Hitler Ordered to His Soldiers to go in Different provinces and Kill the guerillas and other groups against Him and His Nazi.. Then there is one German troop which was go to one areas.. All Men, from 10-65 years old were let them fall in a line.. They counted in to 2..
The Men who got the Number 3 will forward and execute.. Then there is a 12 year old Boy who got the Number 2.. And the Commander of German Troop were saw the 12 Year Old French Boy who wears a Boy Scout Belt Buckle.. Then The Commander was ordered and said to the Boy.. "Scout Sign!" The Boy was do what the Commander ordered.. He did the scout sign, After this. The Commander said "RUN Boy RUN" He ordered the Boy to leave the province and go to other places.. The Boy was salute to the commander. And He run away to the German troop.. Do you know why the German Commander let the boy go ...? Because He was a former scout and He consider the boy as His younger Brother, Because of scouting, He don't care if that Boy was French or whatever.. He knows that all scout was His Brother in whatever race, creed, nationalities etc..

Anyway That's all.. Take Care.. YITS,

Anjo RESA -Philippines Council
