Glaucoma Eye Test Results
Sunday 10th April 2005
This year the Club held our first Eye Testing Session for Glaucoma.
The session was held at Riverbank Veterinary Practice Preston.
Our Vet for the session was Mr Stuart Ellis who with his professional
manner and expertise put both the dogs and the owners at complete ease .
The Club would like to again thank Mr Stuart Ellis on behalf of both dogs and owners and hope that these sessions can become an annual event .
We had 18 Shiba Inu’s present and three Cocker Spaniels and
all passed
with flying colours.
What is Glaucoma ?
Glaucoma is increased pressure within the eye. Cells inside the eye produce a clear fluid that maintains the shape of the eye and nourish the tissues inside the eye. The balance of fluid production d drainage is responsible for maintaining normal pressure within the eye . In glaucoma the drain becomes clogged but the eyes keep producing fluid. Therfore the pressure in the eye increases. The increased pressure in the eye causes the eye to stretch and enlarge.
The only way to know for sure if your dog has glaucoma is to have the
Intracular pressures Measured by a veterinarian.
A perfect solution for glaucoma does not exist! However, with early treatment, you
can often protect eyes against serious vision loss.
Glaucoma is an expensive life time disease to treat especially genetic glaucoma in dogs.
We as a breed are currently under investigation by the British Veterinary Association as to whether we have a problem with glaucoma within the breed, but if everyone takes a little time to have the test done, we will hopefully eliminate genetic glaucoma ever occurring in our breeding programmes.
