FISHING IN BRAZIL WITH ARTMARINE. P

3/1/07. To all our friends and fisherman, once again the annual migration of Marlin has arrived at the Royal Charlotte Bank off Canavieiras, Bahia, Brazil.

David Watkins was back with good friend Dan Gerity, brother Andy and Sons Colin and Ian. They fished 3 days on Coyote I - the 1st day they raised 2 Blues and released 1 around 350 lbs which had a Satellite Tag attached, so hopefully in a month we might know what it’s been up to; still waiting for info on the White Marlin released with a Sat Tag last month; we will keep you up to date as we get the info. Dan also caught a Sailfish which was Dan’s first Blue and Sail. Day 2 they got 2 bites from Blues and released 1 around 400lbs.

The Bahia Tournament in Canavieiras was held on the 24th and 25th of November with 11 boats and 48 anglers showing up from Salvador, Ilhéus, Comandatuba and our own Coyote Fleet. The weather was perfect this year and the fishing looked very promising. Coyote I got points on the board the 1st day raising 4 Blues and got the hooks to stay in 2 of them, both around 200lbs.

There were 13 Blue marlin and 2 Sailfish released on the first day, Lebras was in the lead with 2 Blue Marlin and 1 Sailfish released, there were 3 boats with 2 Blue Marlin and 5 boats with 1, so the tournament was anybody’s to win.

The 2nd day aboard Coyote III Colin caught the first 2 Blue Marlin, David caught a Sailfish then Andy got the Big fish on at 1 pm. As he was going to the chair another rod went off and we had a double header. With both fish going in different directions we decided to go for the big fish. David was fighting a 150 lb fish and we set him up with a stand up harness so the 130 lb rod was a bit easier to handle. He managed to bring the fish to the boat while we were chasing the big one. After 15 minutes we released the 1st fish, 35 minutes later Andy had the big fish at the side of the boat. We headed straight home to make the weigh-in from a long way offshore. Our big fish weighed in at 831 lbs / 378 kg, so with 50 points for released Billfish and a point per kg for weighed fish we scored 628 points.

Coyote III came out the winner, with 5 released Billfish and 1 weighed. What a fantastic day’s fishing, the boys raised 9 Blues, 2 sails and 2 whites. For the 2nd day of the Tournament there were 21 Blue Marlin released, an amazing tally. The 2nd place boat was Lebras with 3 Blues and 1 sailfish released and a 365 lb / 166 kg fish weighed. The 3rd place went to Mahi Mahi with 5 Blue Marlin released. What a great tournament. Maybe you can be next year's winner!

The next day, the 26th, the weather changed but David and the gang managed to raise 3 Blues, get 2 bites and release 2.

Bill Thomson was back to try his luck again on the 29th and was in for a busy day. 1st up was a Blue around the 1000 lb mark that hit the short lure and dropped it straight away; 15 minutes later we got another bite from her and had her on for 5 minutes until in the distance she came up jumping and threw the hook.

We got another bite soon after and pulled the hook again, but they just kept coming and we released the 1st at 500 lbs and the next 3 to be released were around 300 lbs. Altogether we raised 10 Blue and 2 sails, 6 of them were over 500 lbs; needless to say Bill had a great day and proved his luck was still with him; last year in 1 day of fishing he released 4 Blues from 5 bites. The same day Coyote I was out with Roberto Machado and they had fish all over the baits all day; they raised 5 Blues and got 4 bites but had no luck keeping the hooks in. 2 of the fish were over 500 lbs.

The next day Roberto Machado and the Gang fished the Coyote III and their luck changed; the boys raised 7 Blues, had 5 bites, released 4 around 200 to 300 lbs and released a White Marlin as well. We watched a large Blue Marlin Free Jumping and got the boat very close but she was not interested in feeding. How about that for a day's fishing!

Bill Thomson fished again on the 1st of December and was in for another busy day. We pulled the hooks on the first 3 Blues, 2 were around 500 lbs, released 1 around 300 lbs and he caught his biggest to date, a 650 lb Blue released.

Tim Choate was back fishing the 4th to the 9th and the first day we raised 3 Blues, had 2 bites, one from a fish around 800 lbs on a live Tuna, but we had no luck hooking the fish.

The next day was a different story, Tim raised 6 Blues, had 5 bites, released 4 around 200 to 400 lbs and raised 3 sails with 1 release.

Day 3 we raised 7 Blues, had 4 bites and caught 3, one around 450 lbs. A weather change came through and the fishing dropped off the next day. We released a Sailfish the next day and the last day we released 1 more Blue. Not a bad trip.

For 15 days fished Billfish totals were 81 raised, 60 Bites and 32 released just for the Coyote Fleet alone.

For the Tournament there were 140 Billfish raised, 80 Bites, 34 Blue Marlin Released, 4 Weighed and 7 Sailfish released. Not bad for 2 days?! Canavieiras may very well be the Billfish capital of the world. Why don't you come check it out for yourself?

For all of you that didn’t make it to this bite, we still have 4 months of great fishing ahead, so get your act together and give me us call, send an email, so you don’t miss out on a great experience and the wonderful fishing we have here. On top of the Billfishing we caught around 100 Dorado, 20 Wahoo and countless Tuna over this period as well.

Tight Lines and Great Fishing to all.
