BALLINA AND EVANS HEADS. 7/7/08.
Forgt all ideas of fishing the roks or headlands for the next week at least unless your wife has a "BIG POLICY" on you for being swept of the rocks while fishing, a there is every chance of this happening, if you are near the river mouth, or round all the beaches at this area, of the East Coast.
Even fishing in the river you will need to use extreme caution to brave the massive logs etc, floating down the creeks and rivers, extra caution when motering between fishing spots is dvised as well as many big chunks of trees are a=mainly submerged and you wont see them until you are lmoston top,of them.
If you can find a quiet spot out of the wind and weather, you should have quite a pleasant few hours, but don't be expecting big catches as with all the fresh that has been going down the both rivers, the fish are sure to be sickened with all the worms and grubs washed into the system, when they absolutely gorge themselvesthe first few days, then go of the "Chew" for a wee while.
Nex week should be a really good start to fishing again, as long as the rain doesn't keep on pouring down as it's been doing, everywhere except round Brisbane, where one of the dams is down at 10% again, Somerset, has plenty of water, so it should be OK for fishing, again if you are an experienced boatman, and for Gods sake wear your life jackets, you aren't a cissy if you wear one, even if nothing untowards happens, but, if your boat ges upside down and you aren't wearing one: That will probably be the last thing you will ever think off. So even if the owner of the boat is pig headed, and I've been there myself, make sure that your passengers, and especially the children, are wearing there's , before they get into the boat, as the chop in "Somerset Dam" can be a good four feet in the middle, and easily big enough to sink some some small "Tinnies".
A few fish, aren't worth a a life lost.

Best fishing in the river this month will be for those who are chasing the winter“Whiting”, and there are plenty in the “Richmond River” at the moment. You will find these in all the favourite haunts of the townsfolk all though getting the correct lies of these sometimes isn’t too easy.
good spots are: “Pimlico Island” “North Creek” in the “Broad Water” along all the sand banks that are throughout this area and all the way up to the Wardell Bridge “area.
FLATHEAD: you will find these fish on all the drop off from the sand flats throughout the system. as well as along all the ocean beaches this month, fish fairly light for these and only use a heavier meter of tippet, to allow for their head swinging.

Most of the beaches are fishing really well for “Sea run “Bream”< Flathead Chopper Tailor” and a Few “Dart”, The “Australian Salmon” have been a we bit fickle towards the end of the week, however they could return in good numbers again , so have some flies for these in you fly box. Best flies for these are in the previous columns for this area, and are featured in the “Estuary Flies”.
“Bream” “Flathead” and Winter Whiting” are spread through out the system, so through the day these will be your best chance of a top days fishing , then onto the beaches and points in the evening.

Fishing at the moment is quite dangerous and local tackle shops are the best way to get safe places if you really want to fish.
Although I don't advise it especially on a run out tide, the best fishing is at the river mouth, though you are better waiting until the flood tide starts to bring in some clean salt water, into the river system, this is when they will get into a feeding pattern.
If you are not a competant swimmer and you are all weighed down with "U BEAUT" fishing paraphanalia, then you shouldn't be down at the river mouth at all, if however you are a safety concious then you can pick up some good fish on this run in tide.
"BUT BE EXTREMLY CAREFULL"
Happy Holidays.
Try the Local RSL. and you won't be dissapointed.

Some very good Sand Whiting have been caught in the river on the usual sand banks that abound throughout the river, Pimlico island and down towards the river mouth, has been a top spot for good Flathead and top Whiting.
Jewfish: as usual there have been some decent fish caught on "FLY" using Golden Olive Scotties Jewfish exterminators. Best spot is along the town beach.
EVANS HEAD. 17/12/07.
The river from the mouth all the way back is fishing well for: Bream, Luderick, Flathead and Whiting. If you can't read the river, then ask at the local tackle house for the best flies, bait and lures and of course the top spots for holiday makers to use them..All headlands and surf beaches have good Jewfish and Luderick along them, top pick is ""Airforce Beach".
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. GOOD FISHING.

Both of these holiday places are top spots to fish in the last week, with good big "Aussie Salmon" and "Top Quality Tailor", all the way along all the beaches in both places, if one gutter isn't firing after twenty minutes the head to the next one. Better still go to one of the high points and watch to see where the schools and the other fishers and birds are, and head for that-gutter,sometimes the gutters only last twenty minutes, so he quicker that you get there the better sport you will have.
Both River systems have a good head of fish in them, with "Bream", "Flathead" and "Summer Whiting" prevalent in the entire system at the moment. So these spots are worth travelling to.
In the rivers see last reports for both places as this is where to fish for the river species

Good fishing around all headlands and surf beaches.
EVANS HEADS. 29/12/06.
With the influx of tourists this year again, the prime time is the right time, and this is both a "Prime Time" and the "Right time". The times and tides couldn't be better for the fisher-folk to have a ball both in the "Richmond River", river and along the surf beaches.
In the river you will find good "Bream". "Flathead" and "Whiting" , all coming readily to the fly, lures or bait, try the long wand if you have one and you will be "HOOKED FOR LIFE. " You really will enjoy the new experience of how the fish fight better and with less stress to the fish.
Well to all our readers.
A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND REMEMBER TO COME BACK AGAIN NEXT YEAR.

BALLINA. 12/12/06..
The "Richmond River", is fishing well at the moment, good catches of "Sea Run Silver Bream", "Flathead" and "Whiting" are in the lower reaches best fishing is on fly !!! but what fly you may ask ??????
Flies to try, try the proven, "Scotties Bream Busters" for "Bream" , available at "Anglers Warehouse", "Tweed Heads", or a # 2. "Deceiver", in "Chartreuse and White", or "Claret and White" for "Flathead", this is one of the best colours for these fish, the correct colour is the back of a red bucktail, yes the part that you usually throw away, this is one of the secrets that we professional fly dressers have been keeping to our self's for aeons !! lol. it is the spot on colour.
Try between "Pimlico Island" and "Wardell Bridge" for "School Jew" and some quality Bream" at night.
All "Ocean Beaches" are worth a try for "Tailor", "Flathead" and " Summer Whiting", the best sport for these (whiting)is to catch them on the long wand, they really provide you with some great sport, that the bait soakers never get to experience. Try it you will be amazed at the difference.
EVANS HEAD. 12/12/06..
Very similar to "Ballina" with all the beaches fishing for "Flathead" and "Jew".
In the "Evans River", starting ath the mouth try for "Luderick", further upstream good "Bream", "Flathead" and "Whiting", are to be found in all the usual haunts.
On the reefs good Trag Jew Pearl Perch and Snapper have been the preferred catch this week on the charter boats.
