COOBY DAM.

22/5/08. Like most of the dams in this area farther up QLD. from Brissie, there have been some decent catches taken with some good fishing early morning and late after noon, Fishing in the "Avo", you are best trying an Ice Jig, best colours are White, with a flash of silver and a touch of Red.

Morning and evening is a different style though, with your best chance casting into the cover or long grass round the edges of the impoundment and have patience and wait until the last of the rings stop radiating from where your Fly, "Popper" "Mouse" or whatever your favourite dry fly landed. Hesitate a few seconds more, then twitch it a few inches, let it sit again, and wait, keeping doing this and you will soon have any wily "Old Man Bass or his Mate, in a splashing strike at your offering.

"CRESSBROOK DAM TOOWOOMBA 22/5/08

"Many of the locals have changed to Soft Plastics and Tail Spinners, in the Dawn Rise and the Gloaming rise, but they are way behind the eight ball compared to the guy fishing the long wand, as he is going to be the one using the correct approach and the best technique, at both of the peak times this next month, that's ofcourse dawn and Dusk..

Fishing on the top, fish close into any snags, long grass, [no good for your new pipe. lol] or features that are around the edges of this nice wee dam on top of the range. Best flies are still the ubiquitous wee natural deerhair popper tied on the equally strange size #10 Tarpon hook, believe me when I tell you it will cast like a bullet and the touch down has just the correct amount of splash to attract the fish without spooking it. In the evenings change the colour to either "Black" or "Purple" with a band of White, Orange or Fluro Green , but only tied as a band on the top of the fly, as it is only there for you to see, not for the fish to see and be spooked with it, but if your eyes are like most of us older fishing gentlemen [hmmmm!!] lol. we definately need that extra aid to picking up what is sometimes a barely perceptable touch on the popper, other times it's like a Churchill Tank, as the fish almost clears the water in getting to the fish before the rest of the school in that snag get to it first.

LESLIE DAM.22/5/08

Still getting some good Golden Perch to a trolled lure, worth trying the same method with a barely moving boat and a big cod fly or Perch Fly.

BORUMBA DAM. 22/5/08.

All in all definately best fly to use is Scotties Custom Toga Fly..

LENTHALLS DAM. 22/5/08.

COOBY DAM. ..

Best chance for a few fish in this dam, I am sorry to say, is going to be for the bait soaker's. Best bet is from those who bring their own , Live Yabbies, or freshwater shrimps. You can get them in the dam but if conditions aren’t right then you can spend a lot of time looking for them and with no guarantee that you will finish up with enough for the days fishing.

It’s also worth a try trolling a 45-cm gold/yellow lure for the “Yellow Perch that are moving around in the dam in the last week or so.

Remember though that if you don’t have a line in the water then you have no chance of a fish, so you would definitely be better of with a coldie and a BBQ at home with the family. lol.

Don't forget to invite a few fisher mates round and tell a few lies then everyone will be happy.

CRESSBROOK DAM. 17/11/07..

This dam is still not as good as it should be, but most of this is still due to the drought which really has hit this area badly, both for farming and fishing !!. The rain in the district hasn't really done much for the condition of the dams or the land, although, it has freshened up everything a wee bit, we definitely need a hang of a lot more.

One way to try to stir them up through the daylight hours is to use an “Ice Jig” these worked through the school often puts them into a feeding mood, although it sometimes is only because they are getting annoyed at the jig going past their swim, this often causes them to strike in annoyance

LESLIE DAM. 17/11/07..

This dam is similar to Cooby Dam. Best bet is with live shrimp, yabbies or scrub worms, again it’s a safer bet to take them with you as with the weather that we have recently the worms could be heading for “The UK” trying to get some moisture lol.. Though, in some of the areas that are holding a wee bit moisture, you may just get some closer to the surface

Trolling for Golden Perch, is a safe bet though, as you can usually get one if you spend the time fishing. If you do have a few worms then have a go for the “Silver Perch that are in this dam, there are some good fish in here still to be caught. tight lines desi

COOLOOMUNDI DAM. 17/11/08..

For this dam read the last three reports as they will be the way to go here as well, as there is no change in the water conditions, this last week.

LENTHALS DAM:17/11/07.

This dam is the very same as the other ones except, that there have been some decent “Bass” caught on the surface, and also just sub-surface, the way to go is, give the long wand a go, and fish early morning with an “Allies Shrimp” tied on a “Sparton Salmon Double # 4. Keeping the recipe to the original pattern that “Ally McGowan” gave us all those years ago, (for the salt water specialists.

This is tops for Jacks as well) make sure that you have a decent long tail of “Orange” calf tail, or if you don’t have one with long enough fibres, use an orange bucktail instead, when you tie this on, that is for those that do tie their own don’t forget to add the G/PH tippets under the shank as well as on top under the “Grey Squirrel Tail” fibres. these are really an important addition to entice the fish to strike and fool them into believing that the fly is really alive and will be a spot of good “Tucker”

CRESSBROOK DAM 17/11/08..

As with all the dams at this time of the year, the best time to fish is early morning, or late afternoon. "With the lack of water in the top 3/4's of the dam, although the fish are getting crowded into a smaller area, they are still all the harder to catch"

These were the words of wisdom that one of the guys who phoned me last week imparted into my message machine !! I suppose what he said is true BUT ???****++--**>>::*** It's nae wonder my beard is getting whiter and my hair is all but non existent lol. If there is any-one out there who subscribes to this wise words, please leave your name next time Ha ha ha TRUE.

That said you are best trying in the morning round the edges of the dam, or late on in the Avo in the same areas, through the day you are best to concentrate in the deeper parts of the dam, best place is where the feeder creek is occasionally letting in some fresh water.

With the drought lasting as long as it has thats about the best the fishing will get.

For the metal tossers your best bet through the middle of the day is to do a spot of trolling, and changing your lure frequently to soft plastics, or tail spinners.

Worth a try using ice jigs, near the top end of the dam in the deeper water.

COOBY DAM. 17/11/07.

Still not a lot happening in this dam, best bet is to take your Binoculars with you and do a spot of "Bird Watching" lol

LESLIE DAM. 17/11/08

Best reports from there say that there have been a few"Golden Perch" and "Silver Perch", taken by the bait soaker's and those trolling their wee metal thingies Hmmm.

CRESSBROOK DAM. 29/12/06.

Happy Festive season to all up in the high country round about "Toowoomba" By this time of the holidays you will be ready to settle into a nice wee bit of fishing, and this is one dam that shouldn't disappoint you. Good fish are coming to Flies, soft Plastics as well as lures, but the most success has been with flies and soft plastics. At last the locals are really giving the long wand a decent try out and the-reports have been good so far over the holidays. Best place to try is in the deeper water that you will find in the far end.

COOBY DAM : 29/12/06.

Nothing great happening in this dam, infact you would probably have a better day at a holiday "Barbie". However for those that are there, you may get a few small "Cod" on live bait. and some small "Golden Perch"

GLEN LYON DAM. 29/12/06.

Best days fishing in this dam will be to lure tossers !!. or "Bait Soakers"!!. A few "Golden Perch", and some small "Cod" will be your lot, as it isn't really firing as one would expect.

LESLIE DAM. 29/12/06.

This dam is firing quite well considering all things, with some good medium sized "Cod" to either trolled lures, or well sunk "Cod Flies" fished with plenty of jag movements you retrieve. "Golden Perch" have been coming to live bait, lures, and deceiver type flies, best colours have been in Olive, with plenty of Flash, or Orange, with some copper flash in the wing.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERY_ONE UP IN TOOWOOMBA.

Especially "HARRY P." if you are in the area !

CRESSBROOK DAM. 18/12/06.

Average sized “Bass” are coming to well presented flies fished into the margins, and where ever there is any cover worth talking about. Best fishing time is ofcourse early morning, (up with the “Sparras”), or late into the evening hoping for a wee bit of a “Glomming Rise”.

“Frog”, patterns are doing well for anyone surface fishing at these times, as is a natural popper. or a small “Purple Popper” both tied on a size 10 “Tarpon”, hook.( believe me !! )

In deeper water try fishing with deep diving lures , or soft plastics, if you can work out where the 12 metres mark is, try fishing either with a soft plastic, or fish with a sinking line and a short tippet of no more than 3' and fish a “Dahlberg Floating Minnow”, either with a Red Marabou tail, or an Orange Marabou tail. However if you have it , use a small bunch of “Arctic Fox” tail, for the tail as it will last you much longer before needing fixed up again.

GLENLYON DAM. 18/12/06.

“Silver Perch” on live worms, a sprinkling of “Cod” to 9 kg. on spinner baits and flies, (check my flies for cod)

COOBY DAM. 18/12/06.

Good “Silver” and “Golden Perch” fished from the bank with either flies or live bait.

LESLIE DAM. 18/12/06.

Local reports are that “Silver” and “Golden Perch” are coming well to live baits, so if you like fishing worms or shrimps, then it’s worth throwing a line in from the bank.

MOOGERAH DAM . 18/12/06.

The water has been “ROARING” into this dam at last !! there is now officially enough water in the dam to cover most of the big fishes backs, as it is now up to 13% Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !!!!!!!"", or if you like it’s now only at :--” 87% EMPTY” lol. .

So we must again heap accolades onto the shoulders of the relevant “Water Board high top Brass”. Well done guys and you definitely deserve the “Mega Bucks” that the state government heap onto you and your secure jobs, and all deserve all the perks that you are all still claiming for a terrific job well done , we can all sleep at night knowing that you are all still on the ball and looking after the states drought problems. Hmmmm !! Last report from there was that some fish have been caught on live shrimps and worms infront of E.G. Wellers park.

Roll on to the winter of 2010, when we might either have a dam again, or maybe a huge “CAR PARK” for redundant water board officials. !!!!.

LENTHAL DAM. 18/12/06.

Barramundi and Bass coming easily to the fly this past week, with reports of Barramundi”, up-to 140 cm, caught on “Scotties Barramundi Deceivers”, and the top fly for “Bass”, being the ubiquitous “Allies Shrimp”, in the “Orange”, configuration. Good fish have been caught last week on “ 3” Mad Mullet Lures, from “Lively Lures” and “slider grubs”. In the deeper water try jigging for “Bass”, with an “Ice Jig”.
