HINZE DAM.7/7/08

Best places to go in the next week should be in the south east arm of the dam, with plenty of cruising “Togas” to be seen throughout her day. best places to fish for these on fly are from : The most eastern point of Conners Bay”,round into Nevs Nitch”, then across the bay there to the points at “Nevs Nitch”,”Ted's Water fall” “Roy's Run” through the “Narrows”, “Paul's Point” and along the long shore at “Raggies Reach” continuing as far up the creek as possible to your boat, yes even up in the narrows there you will have some wonderful fishing for “Togas” as well as the resident “Bass”.

Flies to try include my favourite: “Des’s Toga Special “ and Des’s ”Toga Killer” both of which you will find in the “Bass flies featured in the groups pages and both are at their best tied on “Sarton Double Hooks. However if you don’t tie your own or you dot’ have e a mate who does, then failing that the only place on the coast that stocks them since I retired is “Anglers Warehouse” where “Julie” and “Graham” may still have a few left, though it will be first in best dressed. lol Another good fly for “Togs” this month is “The “OLive Minkie” tied on a L/S Gamakatsu # 1. to a # 2/0. remember to tie in a throat with red “Fluro Fibre” in it, also just a pinch of Silver KrystalFlash, tied longish.

COD: These have been hanging around “Ossies Hump””, this ell known sunken hill is always a top spot for these big fish, remember to fish fairly heavy leaders, unless you are fishing bronze hook, as I still don’t reckon (I know) that stainless hooks rot in a few weeks, that isn’t true although many of the tackle shops continue to perpetuate this fable, I reckon that “Hans Christian Anderson” had a tackle down the coast and started this fable, well, as well as: “Old Rexxie ”lol.

“BASS” : In this southeasern half of the dam start of the inside edge of “Gordon's Gully” where some good fish were landed by a group from “Ipswich”” this last week, the guys were staying down the coast and moving about for the last two weeks, however once they worked out where I had told them to try, they were right i amongst good schools of 40 + cm. fish, which is quite good for this dam in the last few years since it went over a couple of years ago( doesn’t time fly) talking about fly, the best time this next month will be in the late afternoon and ito the evening till an hour or so into the twilight.

keep on trolling until you get to Eagles Nest Cove, Rain forest Cove and onto “Kevs Cove” when you reach the first of these coves change to a floating deer hair popper, “Black” “Purple” or “Natural” are the gun colours this month, with as always a strip of fluro white, or Yellow across the top of the popper, just enough for you to see it in the evening dusk, doesn’t matter about the dark because you will be fishing by hearing the rise mre than seeing it.

With plenty of water in this dam, fishing is still consistant, with fish coming readily to all styles and codes of the sport.

For non boaters, try fishing bait, but try away from the boat ramps, best place would have to be into the bay past the Quarry, using whatever natural bait that you can find.

Lures, will take some big fish if fished in the 4-6 metre depth in the water, here the fish seem to be hanging in a thermocline that with the weather such as it has been the last month, has formed around the 15' - 16' mark, Black and white lures are fishing well, closer in, when fishing the margins, either "Trawling" or casting, use a brightly coloured small lure, small Mr. Twisters also dowell here, if the fish are showing on your sounder, try using an Ice Jig, this can be from"White" to "Red" as it's the action coming through the school that will attrct the fish to your "Jig".

Fly's well you can never go past the ubiquitous, "Vampires", "Clousers" and the never fail "Allies Shrimp" tied in the original "Orange" colour, fishing the surface, all Dahlbergs will suffice, and a green Frog, ie, a "Clarrie Hall Frog", or a "Green Yabby" will put you among the bigger fish.

Fishing in the dam is the best that it has been for many years, what with the full moon ahead, the dam full and running over, and the fish all fiesty, and ready to feed, even the new comer to the sport will have a ball in this picturesque dam an it's surrounds.

Places to try are from the eastern ramp heading south, try the Narrows, the tower it's self, the long grassy banking opposite, the small trees near the short ramp that comes in just there, and fish all the way as far as you can into the old river system, as there are some huge fish in the narrow stretch of water, as well as some good Togas, who claim that as their own part of the dam, as they are quite territorial about it.. Coming down on the other side, try the waterfall inlet, giving the bottom of the water fall a try for Yellow Belly {Golden perch sorry} both the points of this inlet and the next one for "Togas" as they are always there.

From the western boat ramp, always give the area, about 200 metres out from there a fair go, if there aren't many boats around, try fishing in between 12' and twenty', again this is iseal for fishing the fly, or switch it to a soft plastic, twiched through the school, not forgetting to occasionally letting it sink all the way to the bottom as you will always get some bigger fish hanging with the smaller sized schools but lying deep, not at the same depth as the rest of the school.,Dahlberg Den, Des's Den Ians Island, all these areas are worth trying as they are all full of fish, don't expect too many over 48cm, as there aren't many 50+ fish readily caught in the "Hinze".

Cod: try fishing fairly close to the boundary for the banned area that stops you getting to close to the drag, caused by the water going over, as you don't want to give that a go, as it's a long way down. lol Also the Hump, and the rock wall in front of the Restaurant, but towards the eastern boat ramp. Remember that you need a separate licence for this dam.

TIGHT LINES, send me any photos if you land a big one, especially if its a cod, or a Toga.

I Think that you will be pleasantly surprised, with the dam at the moment, with the-water up and I hear; over the spillway, I haven't confirmed this myself as I haven't been down to see it yet but with all the inclement weather and the flooding on the coast and hinterland, the run of must have been immense

The fish will be wide spread in the dam, the places to fish for the next few weeks, even the next couple of months will be round the newly flooded areas as that where all the new tucker for the fish will be found, inbetween the stands of long grass or round submerged trees that are lying in the edge of the water, ofcourse what many sould hhave been doing is: when the water was at it's lowest making a mud map of all the humps, bumps, holes, sunken rocks grassy flats, as when the dam has settled down, then you will know the places they will be hanging about in. To late now though my friend, rememeber the next really dry spell I told you this only a couple of monthas ago, as you would have seen where the old river bed was, and that is always one of the top spots to fish. However if you are new to fishing for "Bass" then watch where most of the other boats are fishing, and follow their lead.

Flies to try are the ubiqutous "Vampire","Clousers", "Soft Plastics", "Scotties Hinze Bug" fishing in the deeper areas just offshore, and a floating natural coloured Dahlburg popper in the early morning, through most of the day when it's over cast like it has been the last few weeks, changing to a Black or Purple Dahlburg popper, with or without a white or lumo yellow band across it's back to help you see in the gloaming.

Good Bass, are to be found in Des's Den, Dahlberg Den Ian's Island on the west arm of the dam, on the eastern arm, try the narrows the inlet where the waterfall is and all the way upto and past the tower, fishing right in towards the edge, and retrieving back out towards the boat, quite slowly. If you are fishing the popper, don't move it until the ripples have settled after tha fly hits the water, just leave it sit, only then give it a short pull, a couple of feet and let it sit again, continue doing this until you are quite close to the boat, then cast again repeating this method as you go.

There are some good Sarratoga being observed on the surface cruising the edges of the points and the edges of the bays, so be readyif you see one of these sfighters, as you will be in for a wonderful experience if you have never had one of these ancient fish on, on being the operative word, as there are more "Togas" on, than there are "Boated". lolIf you give them any slack, then they are off, with the boney mouth, it's unusual for even chemically sharpened hooks to penetrate past the barb, and if youare lucky enough to boat one, remember to take a few photos [send me a copy] and release it as they are really inedible with all the bones that are in them, you will never forget them walking on water when the feel the hook though.

Fishing has been very good the last week or so with some good size fish being caught to the Club Members who have been using some of Paul Goodeys "New Flies" that won him the Title of the "TOP FLY TIER" in these parts of the State, again, very well done Paul, you definately have deserved to winn it for a few years now.

Middle of the day is for setting the boat in the shade under some of the big Gum Trees that surround the dam everywhere that you look, however, that said if you want to keep fishing, Ice Jigs are a good way to try in the deeper water ,where the big fish tend to go in the heat of the mid day sun. something with a bit of flash, not too much just a wee touch and of course a wee bit of red fluro in your Jigs.

Early morning and late evenings are the prime times to fish on this dam, fishing Poppers, or just sunk "Allies Shrimps" near the newly covered grass round the perimmiter of the impoundment. Leech patterns early in the evenings will also do as wil soft Plastics. Every where is firing, there is no place better than the other, so try where ever your Fancy takes you, as there are sure to be fish taken all the Holidays. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to all our Friends and all the holiday makers. desi AKA. theoldflyfisher

Best fishing this last weekend seems to be in the eastern arm of the dam, that said don't forget that the bass are moving about quite a bit at the moment, so don't forget the western side of the dam altogether.

Poppers are doing well early morning and late afternoon, best one ofcourse is the small natural deer hair popper, tied with a TMC Bass Bug Hook # 10. changing to a slightly larger one i.e.. a # 6. in "Purple" or "Black" as the evening progresses into the gloaming rise. (wishful thinking lol) With both of these poppers it's advisable to tie in a "Fluro" yellow or orange band on the top of the flies body, to enable you to see the take as the darkness closes in. If you are tying your own try to keep the colour only on the top of the fly as you don't want to distract from the silhouette of the popper.

Soft plastics are doing quite well this week and keeping these in the natural colours, is the best way to go.

Fishing spots to try are, from the eastern boat ramp, head up to the left and start fishing at the "Narrows" you can fish both sides of the channel here, along the right hand side is worth trying for "Sarratoga"., several were hooked last week but they all came of the hook before the reached the landing net. Remember to sharpen those hooks or you stand no chance with these smart fish, and remember to keep the lines tight or they will come of as they are jumping. If you are targeting "Togas" keep your eyes open when you reach, "The Sticks" and the opposite side at "Pauls Point" and "Raggsies Reach". There are some really decent "Bass" stretching from "Pauls Point", up towards "Raggsies Reach"t.

Starting fishing from the western boat ramp, try "Jason's Joint","Dahlburg Den", and "Des's Den". All these spots are fishing well with the long wand, and the same flies as are working in the other arm.

HINZE DAM> 29/12/06.

"Wakey", "Wakey" !!!!! , every-one who likes to fish dams and other impoundment's should be up with the "Sparras" and head for this dam before day break. Barometric pressure is ideal for all the fish species in the dam, especially when there is a quick drop in the pressure, but when it does happen as it sure will over this weekend, don't take too long before you hide the "Grafite rods" and head for shore. There are a lot of "Ducks Sitting on the Water", but you don't want to become "A SITTING DUCK"" for the "Electric Storms" that we are having every evening.

This weekend fishing will be good through out the day with no time better than another time, yes it will be a "Fishing Bonanza" for sure. "Fair Dinkum".

Reports from the dam and the way every-thing is setting up will have the fish biting like never before, or my name isn't "Joe Blogs", lol. No matey, it is a sure fire time.

No point in telling you what flies to use as they are all in last weeks report, the only addition that I would recommend is the latest two (2) from the stable at "Anglers Warehouse Fly Tying Club" you will find them under "Estuary Flies" page eight. They are wee crackers. First one aptly called "A HOGMANAY FLY", not the easiest fly to tie but a "KILLER", and the second is the "Midnight Marauder", again it's a wee bit fiddly till you have tied you first one, but pop along and see "Kerry Mitchell " and learn from the professional how to tied properly. Or buy it at "Anglers" they aren't available any-where else.

places to fish, see the last report all is contained there.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.
