Clarrie Hall Dam. 7/7/08..

Haven't heard anything about the fishing in this beautiful dam, which is full at the moment, so well worth traveling over the border down to spend the day amongst some of the most spectacular scenery in this area of NSW/QLD borders.

Remember that although nobody has sent a report in that doesn't mean it's not fishing well, this dam is always fishing well when there is plenty of water in it, so if you are in the area, and you want to send in a report, please do so I will help you with your reports, if you aren't too sure, but it is quite easy, and it's fishing reports from someone fishing the dam we want. desi

Clarrie Hall Dam , now this is one of the exceptions to the rule, this dam is well worth travelling to, although the fish aren't as big as those in "Somerset", there is plenty of water in this dam and the quality is good as well, which means that although they aren't huge fish they will at last give you a fight if you are using the long wand and fishing light. !! Is there any-other way to go ??.

Here it's worth fishing through-out the day, as with the water being that bit cooler, they fish aren't hugging the bottom at mid-day.

Most of the holiday makers will have gone home now, so the dams will be empty and left to the local fishers.

The usual places to fish first are as follows,:Head straight out from the ramp at "Crambs Farm"( when will they ever change this name to the farmers name who tends the property ?? I wonder ??) when you get to this side cast in-towards the far away shore line and snags, if there is no takers here continue up-towards he feeder creek as this is one place that is often forgotten by most of the "Bass" fishers who go to this picturesque spot, especially where the tree lined bank comes into the narrows .

Other places to try , are back down the dam to the Pine Trees and fish all the way along the shore from the old boat ramp (the one used when the dam was nearly empty) al the way along to the next point Change your fly when you reach this point for a "Minke Fly" in Olive and tie in a touch of orange at the throat. You will have more success with a "Minke" here than you will with a "Rabbit Zonker" in the same colours, as there is more natural movement in the Mink guard hair than-in the rabbit, or Feather.(there is also a small natural minnow with these colours hanging about this spot)

Further down towards the dam before the narrows, where the old scout camp was, try fishing the two small lagoons that are on the right hand side, that's where the dead trees are and the old water pipes that were used to contain the weed. Now this is a perfect spot to try you "Deer Hair Poppers" These are my own favourite spots to fish, it feels like you are the only one in the world as it gets soooooo !! quiet when you sneak into these two spots. Casting into the edge of the lily pads, and be ready or they will have you back into the snags, and this is where the biggest fish in the dam are to be found.

29/12/06.

At this time of the year, I always remember our old mate "COL WYLIE", who passed away and left a great void in this fly fishing group as well as every other fishing club and environmental cause that he was involved in, and "COL", was a mighty worker for a great deal of different causes. So please pause with me, and remember our

"GREAT MATE COL WYLIE"

"VALE COL".

WE ALL MISS YOU MATE.

Fishing in the dam has picked up this last week and with the inclement weather that is happening at the moment, and plenty of "good water" in the dam, this weekend will be not only your last attempt to get a trophy fish from this dam (there still are some humdingers left in it) but will be your last time to wet a line this year, and everything is conducive for a ripper weekend.

Give the two (2) new flies from "Kerry Mitchell's", fly tying stable at "Anglers Warehouse" called a "MIDNIGHT MARAUDER" and a "HOGMANAY FLY". You can find them on page 8 of the "Estuary Flies "in this groups fly tying pages, or you can get them from "Julie" at "Anglers Warehouse"

Starting from the jetty at "Crambs Farm" head straight to the opposite shore and fish all the way to the point, best fly that I have ever found for this area is ofcourse an "Allies Shrimp", fished slowly and just under the surface.

Tie it on a Salmon double, this allows the fly to swim properly, as it should like a wounded shrimp, trying to get back into the grassy cover !! fishing in towards the vegetation where the trees are.

Next place to try is the shore line infront of the pine trees, it is going well this last week, fish are only in the 38 - 40-cm mark but really well conditioned and fight like crazy, when you get to the point try changing to an "Olive Minkie", this is the best fly to pull a large fish from the deep water at the corner, if you go too close to shore at this point, you will get loads of small fish in the 32 - 35-cm. sizes. At the opposite bank where the trees have fallen into the water, switch to a soft plastic, with a medium sized head, and lean on them when you feel the fish-bite or you will loose them sure as there's a man in the moon lol.

I normally don't fish much further than the narrows, where you can have some very good surface popper action fishing in towards the snags and shore.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVER_ONE.

CLARRIE HALL DAM NSW. 12/12/06.

The dam is ticking along nicely, not over productive but still enough to satisfy all the fishers who love to fish this beautiful dam.

Best spots are still fishing into the weed beds with an intermediate line and an “Allies Shrimp”, in Red, or “Orange”, tied on a # 4 low water salmon double, with a 6’ to 7’ cast, ( whoops sorry leader) then make the tail approx. twice the length of the shank, use the proper recipe for this fly, as I have seen more abominations of attempts to copy this, in the last two or three seasons than I have seen in my 50 + years fishing and tying, and-this fly is of-course one of my favourite “desert Island flies”, and the one that scored “the master, “Des Charles”, 10, fish with 11, cast, one morning as he was taping for a segment for “Brownies Coast Watch” all caught on film and not doctored either !! ,!!!( like some fishermen are wont to do).

I am surprised that some of the “Electric” boys haven’t tried to say that “they”, invented this fly, as well as the ones that they so wrongly claim as their own. Hmmmm !!! . EH TO BRUTE. Come on guys if you think that you invented it, let’s debate it and prove who really invented “The VAMPIRE”. or check the report that “Chris Beech” put in the “FLY LIFE MAGAZINE” , telling all about who really invented this fly, or even look up my Bass Fly recipes. and find out who I gave it to first, when they wanted to try and win the first trip to the USA with a few special new flies !!.
