Second Chances

is proud to present the

Guide to Days of Our Lives Internet Slang.

It is divided into several subsections:

If you still don’t find what you’re looking for, ask us on the message board! We’re a wealth of useless-- er, I mean vitally important information.

If you are offended by anything you read here, try reading with a little more whimsy. Come on, it’s a dictionary dedicated to soap opera slang! At any rate, direct complaints to a member of management.

Acronyms in general use:

You will see many of these not only in the Days online community but in online communities of all kinds. This is not a complete list, but once you get used to seeing them you will find it easier to decode on your own. For a broader list of internet slang check out other websites such as Wikipedia for a more comprehensive list.

2C: Second Chances. See also SC

BBBD: Big Bad Bryan Dattilo (his self-chosen nickname)

Bump: Not an acronym. On boards like Second Chances, the topic/discussion/thread most recently posted in is at the top of the list. If someone doesn't have anything to add to a discussion, but wants that discussion/topic/thread to be at the top of the list where everyone will see it, s/he might write "bump" in her post to "bump" it up to the top. Writing any word will create a new post and change the thread's positioning on the board, but most people say "bump" or "bumping this up."

EOM: end of message

FWIW: for what it’s worth

FYI: for your information

GMTA: great minds think alike

IA: I agree

ICAM: I couldn’t agree more

IMHO: in my humble opinion

IMNSHO: in my not so humble opinion

IMO: in my opinion

ITA: I totally agree

ITDA: I totally disagree

JK or J/K: just kidding

LOL: laughing out loud

LMAO: laughing my ass off

NT or N/T: no text

OMG: oh my God

OT: off topic

OTOH: on the other hand

PTB: powers that be

RAS: rapid aging syndrome

ROFL or ROTFL: rolling on the floor laughing

ROFLMAO or ROTFLMAO: rolling on the floor laughing my ass off

SORAS: soap opera rapid aging syndrome

TIIC: the idiots in charge

TPTB: the powers that be

TTFN: ta ta for now

TTYL: talk to you later

WTH?: what the hell?

WTF?: what the f---? (limit your use of this one around here, please)

Websites and Web Lore:

Links to most of the websites mentioned here can be found in the links section of Second Chances.

2C: Second Chances (where you are right now).

Big Six: Used in the early 2000s, it refers to the six holdovers from the 1980s supercouple era: Drake Hogestyn, Deidre Hall, Kristian Alfonso, Peter Reckell, Matthew Ashford, and Melissa Reeves.

Carolyn Hinsey: She is one of the editors of Soap Opera Digest and author of a column called It’s Only My Opinion. In the summer/fall of 2002, this website began an e-mail campaign in which we e-mailed Days and the magazines every day for 100. Each day we gave them a new reason that Lucas and Sami should be a couple (you can see the list over in the classic posts section here). The campaign was quite successful. It was written up in both Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly, helped put the word "Lumi" into frequent use, and was complimented by both Alison Sweeney and Bryan Dattilo.

However, in the same edition of Soap Opera Digest that it was named Fan Campaign of the Week (pictured above), Carolyn Hinsey referred to us as spammers trying to ruin her column for "normal" fans. She had never asked us to stop e-mailing her, and no one else on our mailing list had complained or commented.

Several of us wrote letters to her explaining our intentions in creating the campaign and pointing out that we had had no way of knowing that she was bothered by our messages until we read her column. Many of the letters also suggested that she should not attack us as people even though it is her job to attack Sami and Lucas as fictional soap characters. She published one letter, and did e-mail a few of the campaigners saying that we should stop messaging her. She also spoke to an e-mail address provider and tried (with some success) to have campaigners’ e-mail addresses shut down.

Later, she published a letter in response to the pro-Second Chances letter she had printed. In this letter, Lumi fans in general and the original letter’s author in particular were called, among other things "defensive presumptive bitches" and a "clubhouse click of teeny-bopping worshippers." This letter was full of verbal abuse and words not ordinarily printed in national magazines.

She is not popular around here, and many posters refer to her sarcastically ("Carolyn-love" or "our friend Carolyn") or deliberately misspell her name. Telling certain members of this site to drop their grudges against Carolyn Hinsey will not work, so it is not recommended that you try it.

Carly Wars: Carly Manning was a character who had staunch supporters and rabid haters. Talking about soap operas on the internet was a fairly new thing during her heyday, and the debates over her were the first fierce debates.

Connotator: Jack and Jennifer message board, something of a sister site to Second Chances.

CR: Coffeerooms (Website with all kinds of message boards including several for Days. The relevant ones are usually toDays and Refugees. Famous for being vicious, but you can get great humor and analysis too.)

Crystal Ball: Part of TBN that has special spoilers

EE: The Early Edition (detailed summary of tomorrow’s episode)

Enemies: Sami and Lucas-- Enemies, a Love Story (This website is gone now, but it was the predecessor to this site. Some of the content you see on Second Chances appeared there first. It was the first comprehensive Lumi site and lasted from early 2000 to spring 2002. Original Second Chances began operating on March 12, 2002, about a month before Enemies mysteriously vanished. If Julie, the Enemies webmistress, happens to see this, we miss her and wish she would drop in!)

Faux Era: Used by Jack and Jennifer fans to describe the mid-1990s, when Stephanie Cameron (rather than Missy Reeves) played Jennifer and Mark Valley and Steve Wilder (rather than Matthew Ashford) played Jack.

FTH: Feel the Heat (John and Marlena board with day-ahead pictures and spoilers. It was renamed "Marlena and Friends" during the Princess Gina-Mercenary John storyline, but is often still called FTH. The most popular board actually dedicated to the couple rather than Marlena is called "Breathe.")

Original Second Chances: The site that began operating on March 12, 2002, and was hacked and deleted on February 1, 2004. It looked almost exactly like the site you’re reading now, which began operating the day the original site was attacked.

SC: Usually Salem Circle (the official Days message board) but sometimes Second Chances (that’s us!)

SL: Silver Link (Bo and Hope board)

SP: Salem Place (General Days message board housing EE)

TBN: The Blue Note (Shawn and Belle site)

TR: Turtle Run (General Days message board now called Soapdom)
