Shiloh is the "old man" of all my dogs. He was born on March, 12, 1997. He's a great dog. He gets along well with children and other animals. If you are looking to add a large breed to the family, a Rottweiler would be a good choice. If you are interested in a Rottweiler, I highly suggest you do a lot of research. A good place to start is with the American Rottweiler Club. You can find out information about the origins of the Rottweiler, Rottweiler health issues and information on breeders and rescues. As a Rottweiler owner, I highly suggest obedience classes. Rottweilers are very intelligent and because of their size, it's important to make sure they are trained properly. Not only that, due to Breed Specific Legislation, it's important to make sure you are a responsible Rottweiler owner. Rottweilers are banned, and are in the process of being banned, due to irresponsible breeders and irresponsible owners. While Rottweilers can make excellent pets, they can also be very dangerous in the wrong hands and unfortunately, those irresponsible folks make it harder for the responsible ones.
Yes, Rottweilers are good with children. Shiloh came to our home when my son was 3. Shiloh was 7 when my niece was born. He knows how to behave around them and most importantly, the children know how to behave around Shiloh. It's very important that we teach our children how to behave around dogs. We must teach them to respect the dog. We must teach them "dog language" such as if the dog backs away, it means it doesn't want to be bothered. If the dog growls, that is a warning to leave it alone. Children must learn not to bother the dog when it's sleeping, eating or playing with its' favorite toy. Parents must supervise their children. It only takes a second for something really bad to happen and in the end, it's usually the dog that pays and it usually pays with its' life.
With that said, if you are considering adding a dog to your life please be aware that it is a 10+ year commitment. Please do research to make sure a dog is the right pet for you. Please do research to make sure that you can live with the Rottweiler's characteristics. If you decide to go the breeder route, please go to a responsible breeder. If you choose to adopt, you can find many Rottweilers in shelters and rescues who are awaiting a loving home. For more information, check out these links...
