Title: Human Dragon

Equipment:
None needed

Space:
An open field or gym, free from obstacles

Teams:
Divide your team into 4 teams of 6-8 individuals. You can have odd numbers or vary the length of the "dragon" depending on the skill, size and ability of your athletes.

Set-Up:

  1. Each team designates the "head" person and the "tail " section of the Human Dragon
  2. All other team members fill in behind the head of the dragon by holding on to the person in front of them at the waist
  3. At this point, your four dragon teams should form one long line with all team members connected by holding onto each other's waist in a single-file, one-in-front-of-the-other line

The Challenge:

  1. The goal of the activity is to have the head of each dragon attempt to tag the tail of any other dragon team
  2. Only heads of the dragon can do the tagging as all other team members must remain connected (with two hands) to their teammates
  3. Players attempt to avoid having their team's tail be tagged and skillfully (did I mention, humorously?) attempt to shield their tail from other dragons on the prowl

Implementation:

  1. Each time a tag occurs, the tagging team receives one point and the tail of the team that was tagged becomes the new dragon head, therefore creating a new tail
  2. If one person is a tail for too long, switch the tail and periodic time intervals
  3. The game continues on for a specified time (as competitiveness and interest allows)
  4. If the any of the dragon people in the middle release their grip on the person in front of them, teams are asked to "self-report", count a point against themselves and switch the tail of the dragon. In other words, releasing your grip results in a loss of one point for your team
  5. Dragons should call out their score every time they gain or lose a point

Learning:

This game is great for communication, competition, honesty, cooperation and protection of teammates. By moving as a team to "protect" their tail, the team's success is more likely enhanced. Good luck and have fun!

Cheerleading is hard, and sometimes just getting out a smile when you've
had a bad week can be the biggest chore. As a coach I found that it is
hard to teach facials during the season when you have so much ground to
cover before competition. So here is an award that coaches can give:

Facial Award:

Each week at practice, have one of the coaches or instructors go around
looking for positive facials. When it comes to game day, take the top
five girls and watch them for the best facials before and during the
game. At the end of the game have the head coach present the Facial
Award to the best girl. Include a free facial at a local beauty salon,
she may need it after all that smiling *giggles*. be sure and include
some personal items like a charm, stickers, candy (everyone loves candy,
especially chocolate) gel pens, etc. put them in a small bag all dressed
up by the team! This will encourage the girls/boys to work on what sells
each one of them on the competition floor!

Hope this works for your teams!
Have fun and CHEER CHEER CHEER!

AN IDEA WE HAD ON OUR TEAM!!
SENT IN BY:COACH KIM
11/21/01

EVERY PRACTICE SOMEONE BROUGHT A SNACK AND WATER FOR EVERYONE. WE PUT IT IN A BUCKET AND WHO EVER HAD IT GOT TO RIGHT OR DECORATE THE BUCKET. AT THE END OF THE SEASON WE DREW A NAME OUT OF A HAT TO SEE WHO GOT TO KEEP THE BUCKET. TO GET YOUR NAME IN THE HAT ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS DO A GOOD JOB AT THE GAMES AND PRACTICE.
IT WAS A LOT OF FUN FOR OUR TEAM.

Confidence Builder For Competition!

Here's one to give cheerleaders the night before their competition. In a ziploc baggie, is an array of M&M's Each bag had at least two of every color. Also in the bag was a sheet of paper with this written on it:

Magic Pills
As I was running errands earlier today, I met a wise old elf. She was very pleasant and asked why I was in such a hurry. I told her I had a cheerleading practice with you cheerleaders - our last one before competition.

"Cheerleaders?" she asked. "Are they any good?"

Well, being the proud coach that I am, I responded - "Of course, when they put their minds to it!"

"So tell me more" she asked, and I sat down and told her about each and everyone of you.

When we were all finished with our chat, she was pleased that I took the time to be with her. She was so pleased and impressed that she sent along a gift for each of you. She told me that if you follow the directions exactly as they are, you will shine at competition tomorrow!

These are magic "pills" to be taken very specifically and carefully. Look over their descriptions and consider your needs before you do anything.

The BLUE pills are for helping you to stick your stunts (whether you base, spotter or flyer) and any tumbling passes that you do.

The RED pills are for mighty Team spirit - to help keep it shining through.

The GREEN pills will make your jumps strong and powerful so that you'll seen to be flying.

The ORANGE pills are for mighty voices that will keep strong and not seem to be dying.

The YELLOW pills help to make you smile - you know you're winners with those great grins!!!

The BROWN pills are to help pull it all together - no matter what anybody else says - we all know you're WINNERS!!!

The way these "pills" work is very strange indeed. You may take one each (up to three) for the three things you think you need the most help with no more than 24 hours (one day) before the event. At the event, you can only take three more "pills" before you perform - try to save at least one of every color!

After you finish your turn, the elf said, if you eat one of every color immediately, your routine will stick in the judges' memories.

The elf also told me to share this "BEWARE" with you. If you take them in any way other than the way she said, the results could be B-A-D!!! She wouldn't say how - but I don't want to see - do you?

Spirit Bags

A BALLOON - to keep your spirit inflated

A BAND-AID - for healing hurt feelings (yours or others)

A CANDLE - remember, you are the bright spot in someone's life everyday!

A COTTONBALL - for the rough times, always go for the comfort of your teammates AN ERASER - to remember that every day is a clean start

GUM - to help you stick your stunts/tumbling

HERSHEY HUGS - we all give and receive hugs here

LIFESAVERS - because cheerleaders can save the game with their spirit

A PENCIL - to help you get the cheers (w)rite

A POPSICLE STICK - remember to keep good straight arms

A PUZZLE PIECE - you are a part of something bigger, that isn't complete without you

RIBBON - to show your team colors everyday

A RUBBER BAND - stay flexible

SMARTIES - you are a 'smartie' when school work comes first

SPARKLING CONFETTI - because YOU all sparkle and shine

A SPONGE - to soak up all the new information and ideas you'll be getting

A "STIRRER" - because cheerleaders can stir things up

SWEETTARTS - to accept and appreciate the differences in others

Put these objects and the list in small bags for each of the Cheerleaders!!!!

Be creative with the bags!!
