Missouri started out strong and promising in the early weeks of 1994, but began to falter half-way through the season. The team developed a nasty habit of blowing leads, which contributed to closing out the regular season with an 11-game conference losing streak. Their final record of 32-24 gave them some hope of securing an NCAA Regionals bid, but a poor showing in the Big 8 Tournament put an end to their lofty aspirations.
1994 was Gene McArtor’s last as head coach of the Tigers. He had been hired by then Athletic Director Dan Devine as an Assistant Coach for the baseball team back in the late 60’s. He took over as head coach in 1974. Ironically, it was the departure of Dan Devine, who had returned for a short tenure as Athletic Director in 1993, that provided the impetus for McArtor’s retirement as coach. Joe Castiglione moved up from Assistant Athletic Director to fill Devine’s chair, and in turn invited McArtor to assume Castiglione’s former position.
Shortly after the season’s end, Tim Jamieson, Assistant Coach, was chosen to succeed McArtor after 21 years.
