VOCAL TECHNIQUE TUITION Welcome to the wonderful and challenging world of singing! Whether you choose singing as a hobby or as a career, it certainly is exciting and fulfilling.
HOW VOCAL TECHNIQUE TUITION CAN HELP YOU...
Q. What is voice technique training?
Voice Technique training is specifically aimed at teaching you ‘how’ to sing, rather than ‘what’. It is focused upon the actual method of producing sound and the workings of the vocal mechanism. In other words, when you learn voice technique, you learn to use your full range of notes and vocal ‘effects’ or sounds.
Q. Will the sound of my voice change?
The tone and range of your voice will develop… Usually your tone becomes ‘warmer’ or ‘smoother’ and your natural vibrato will develop throughout your voice. The technique that you learn will give you the knowledge to change your sound as you please… Cold, hot, warm, smooth, rough and so forth.
Q. How often should I have my lessons?
I recommend that beginners or those with serious vocal malfunctions, undertake weekly lessons for at least the first five weeks to help to reinforce the good habits and eliminate the bad ones!! Apart from that, weekly or fortnightly appointments etc, are your decision. It is the regularity that breeds familiarity, so if you have problems with practice, then regular lessons will benefit you more. Remember that it is not what you learn - it is what you do with what you learn that counts…
Q. How long will it take until my voice is ‘ready’?
This is entirely a personal matter. It depends on whether you are re-training the muscles completely from bad vocal habits to good ones, or if you are starting with a clean slate… We are all different aren’t we! The more committed and dedicated you are to your vocal training, the quicker and more thoroughly you will learn. You will know when your ‘voice is ready’, because it will act, react, sound and feel ready. Each time you learn a new aspect of a technique, you will see some immediate results and be able to hear them too. This should be evident in your lessons when you apply the technique correctly...
But lessons are expensive, I can’t afford it…
In so many ways, you get what you pay for… It really is worthwhile investing in some quality tuition, as that will last you for many, many years. Ultimately, you will not suffer the problems and setbacks that the majority of ‘untrained’ singers do. Operations and specialists are very costly… Save yourself the trouble later, and invest in knowledge and technique, that will last you for as long as you need it.
I still can’t afford it…
Then how much value do you place on (A) yourself and (B) your future??? There is a way and you will find it if you are truly dedicated to success.
Will I ever need to have training again after I have developed my technique and voice?
This is a personal decision. If you feel that you want to have a ‘check-up’ with a technique tutor… then by all means, do so. The important thing is that you feel content with your vocal instrument and with how you are playing it! Some singers may not need to go back for years, whereas others may feel the need to see a tutor every 6 months to fine-tune their technique of singing.
