BLENCATHRA

THIS ROUTE TAKES YOU BELOW SHARP EDGE, PERFECT FOR THOSE WHO ARE A LITTLE WARY OF RIDGE ROUTES!

Blencathra from Threlkald mine museam

  • Distance 4 miles
  • Time 3 1/2 hours (approx)
  • Hight 2847ft

This is only a guide, always take a map and compass and know how to use them.

Places and routes may have changed since this was written, anyone following this guide does so at their own risk.

  • From the car park at the end of the minor road (behind the Whitehorse Pub) walk back to the signposted path on your right heading off to Mousthwaite Comb, follow the path up along the side of a row of hawthorn bushes. Where the path splits take the path on your right up a diagonal zigzag path up to the top of the corrie.
  • From the top follow the path to your left along the ridge, a short way along you will see a path to your right which contours along the side of Scales Fell towards Sharps Fell, follow this untill you reach the beck. Cross over and take the steep path along the side of the beck on your left, follow the beck until you reach Scales tarn.

  • From the outflow of the tarn, facing the tarn, follow the path on your left towards the top, this path becomes poor towards the top, keep climbing up until you reach the top. On reaching the ridge there is a clear path, take this to your left to reach the summit.
  • After reaching the summit trace your steps back a short way until you reach a path leading off to your right down along Halls fell ridge, follow this easy path down and follow the path to the left when it splits (following the fence towards the end) to take you back down to the car park.

Threlkald Mine Museam is well worth a visit, the tour around the mine is worth waiting for, the tour is run by the owners who put their passion for mining in to the tour which i found very interesting.
