Chakras

Chakras are points of great energy for one's aura. The word itself is Sanskrit for wheel or disk.
According to East Indian philosophy, man possesses seven major Chakras or psychic centers on his body. Through our Chakras, we transmit and receive physical, emotional, and spiritual energy.

These are the seven main chakras, the colors associated with each one of them, and their energy focus:

1. ROOT CHAKRA

It is the most primitive energy center and regulates our basic survival mechanisms. We associate color red with this chakra. The immune system, our will to live, and our ability to reproduce are in its domain.
The 1st chakra absorbs energy from the earth. It is found at your tailbone. It is sometimes called the base chakra. It is our basic life force and properly stimulated it can ease fears and make us aware of past talents.

Tied to survival, physical vitality, healing, material power, stability, grounding, will power, security, and also sex and sexual energy.

When in balance: there is a sense of security and stability. Sexual energy flows naturally and there is joy in sex.

When unbalanced: there can be over self-indulgence and self-centeredness stemming from a basic sense of insecurity and feelings of instability. Emotions such as grief and depression occur more often than normal. There is guilt or shame associated with sex and sexual energy is repressed. Some physical symptoms can be hemorrhoids, constipation, sciatica, prostrate problems, vaginal problems or bladder disfunction, colon, or vaginal muscles.

When this chakra is disrupted the following symptoms may be observed:

1. Sexual obsession
2. Impulsive and reckless behaviour
3. Possessiveness
4. Insecurity
5. Immediate gratification urges
6. Hyperactivity
7. Power concerns
8. Manipulative behaviour
9. Immune system problems

2. SPLEEN CHAKRA

Located about three fingers below the navel and relates to our empathy to the emotions of others, creativity, mental clarity, intellect, logical thought, intuition, desire, reproduction, death, and strong emotions such as fear and anger.

When in balance: a person will exude self-confidence and well being, exhibits endurance and patience with others.

When unbalanced: feelings of frustration, anxiety and fear are present and can manifest as over attachment to personal property or people. Physical problems may occur such as impotence or frigidity, or someone who is "over-sexed" and overly concerned with it. Diabetes or kidney problems can also be evident.

Found just above the genitals and below the navel. This center monitors our basic emotions, creativity, the lower digestive tract, excretory system, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder and pancreas.

It concerns itself with detoxification of the body. Its color is orange.
Imbalances cause:

1. Lack of vitality
2. Accelerated aging
3. Arrogance
4. Conceit
5. Vanity
6. Anti-social behaviour
7. Loss of identity

3. SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

Located below the base of the rib cage and relates to energy distribution throughout the body, aspiration (breathing), sensitivity, ambition, personal power, protectiveness, also sentiments and emotions.

When in balance: there is an abundance of personal power and the person is self-motivating. An ability to make good decisions and a willingness to put oneself to the test. A good and wholesome self-image is also present.

When unbalanced: Feelings of powerlessness and self-doubt pervade, along with guilt. Person may be overly greedy or quick to anger. Physical symptoms will be associated with the digestive system, such as ulcers, or gall stones. Also hypoglycaemia, hepatitis, or jaundice may occur. Located just below the breastbone at the base of the sternum and it appears yellow in color.

This chakra is the point of personal power and expression of creativity through the balanced use of that power. Astral voyages are also associated with this chakra.

This chakra is also concerned with the powers of the mind, emotions, stomach, and upper digestive tract. The assimilation of nutrients, psychic experiences, rational (left brain) thought processes and atonement to the influence of nature's elements within our lives are part of this chakra domain.
Imbalances cause:

1. Timidity and fear in general
2. Anger and rage
3. Isolation
4. Judgemental and dogmatic behaviour
5. Feeling deprived of recognition
6. Aloofness

4. HEART CHAKRA

Located over the breastbone in line with the heart, this center is associated with the ability to love, both others and more importantly, ourselves. It also relates to generosity, growth, prosperity and wealth, emotional balance, compassion, universal consciousness, as well as imagination and dreaming. When in balance: feelings of love, compassion, acceptance and fulfilment are evident. In control of emotions and easily forgives others.

When unbalanced: there is insensitivity to others, and the person seems closed off emotionally, blocked. Unresponsiveness and passivity will hide a deep sadness. Physical symptoms can be cardio problems such as stroke, or hypertension, or respiratory problems like asthma, and also arthritis. Located in the centre of the chest at approximately the level of the heart muscle between the ribs on the sternum.

Its color is green. This energy center influences the thymus gland of our immune system, circulatory system, tissue regeneration, and right brain function.
It is the center of our higher love, healing, understanding, and compassion.
It is the gatekeeper to the higher chakras and must be unblocked for us to grow spiritually.

It is the crossroad of transformation and balance. It stands midway between the physical and spiritual life. Both forms of energy are processed here. If the spiritual energy coming from the upper 3 chakras is blocked, this will deny the lower 3 the vital energy required for preparing our physical body for its spiritual growth.

Imbalances cause:

1. Attitude of coldness
2. Devoid of compassion and morality
3. Asthma
4. Financial and emotional insecurities
5. Jealousy and possessiveness
6. Mistrustfulness of life
7. Self-doubt
8. Blaming others
