My Great Great Grandfather, James Ashley Fortner, was born in January 1843 in Emanuel County, GA. He was mustered in to Capt. P.H. Loud's Co. H."Wilcox Rifles", 10th Georgia Volunteer Infantry as a Private at Abbeville, GA on May 20, 1861. Promoted to Second Sergeant on January 1, 1862. Wounded by a musket ball in the right hip at the battle of Savage's Station, VA on June 29, 1862. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on December 2, 1864. Survived the war and married Roxannah Martha Harrell on November 13, 1866 in Decatur, GA before moving to Florida in 1871. He later became a County Judge in Polk County, FL for 14 years and had 7 children. He died in 1906 and is buried at the Fortner Cemetery in Parrish, FL.

He fought at Fort Johnson as a sharpshooter. His letters home to his wife, Penelope, were used by the Federal Parks Service to explain the Breastworks, He was my grgrand father,a Ga farmer,and his slaves would not leave after the war.My family is settled in and around, DeSota, Americus and Albany GA. Post of Honor, was put together by a cousin and uses SG, letters to tell the story of  the war ad SG experienced it. U of G has a copy in their library and the book, A Pryor Family Narrative,list 11 generations from about 1630 to 1990.

Cpl.Edward Thomas Lipscomb was my great great uncle,he served in the 56th Virginia Infantry Regiment Company G (Charlotte Defenders) from September 1861 until his capture on April 1, 1865 at Five Forks,he was also involved in Pickett`s Charge on July 3,1863 at Gettysburg as a part of Pickett`s Brigade,under the command of General Richard B. Garnett.After the war he moved to Western Kentucky.

Comments George W Samuel served with the 55th Virginia reg., Co. F, He served galantly in the battles of Harpers Ferry, Fraziers Farm, Groveton, 2nd Mannassas, Gains Mill, Fauquir Spring, Fredricksburg, Sharpsburg, Cedar Mountain, Shepherds Town, Mechanicsville and was taken prisoner by the infamous Iron Brigade on the first day of fighting at Gettysburg on Seminary Ridge. The 55th was led by Col. Brockenbough. Fleeing and surrendering confederate soldiers were recorded bitterly saying, "It wouldn't be like this if ole Jack (Stonewall Jackson) was here." George rests today at his boyhood home in the wilderness of Caroline Co. Va

I am trying to find information on this relative.  He lived in Culpeper County Virginia and was one of several children.  He was with Pickett at Gettysburg and was wounded during the informus Picketts Charge.  I have several other relatives that fought for the Confederacy during the War Between the States.  Surnames include, Ashby, and  Wiley.

He was born 7 Jan 1844 in Crawford Co Missouri .He died 26th Mar 1928 and is buried in Carty Cemetery north of Salem Missouri in Dent County

Joined early 1862 at Hempstead,Texas. Marched to Shreveport,La. where they were dismounted and sent to Arkansas Post to construct Fort Hindman. Captured at battle of Arkansas Post and sent up Mississippi River to Union prison camp. Became ill and left at Hickory Street Hospital (St.Louis,Mo.)where he died Feb.24,1863. Buried same day at Jefferson Barracks(St;.Louis,Mo.). C.B.Horton was my grt-grt-grdfather.

Pvt. Joseph D. Lipscomb was my great great uncle,he volunteered at the age of 16 and was first in action at the Battle of Staunton River Bridge in June of 1864 under the command of Captain Fairinholt.Joseph Lipscomb was born in 1847 and died in 1886,after the war he was a farmer and a school teacher in Charlotte County,Virginia.

Henry "Bud" Simmons was born April 1, 1842, in Sumter County, Alabama.  My great grandfather enlisted, along with two of his brothers, in the 40th Alabama Infantry, Co. K May 10, 1862 in Mobile, Alabama.  The regiment took part in the operation on Deer Creek in route to Vicksburg.  Following his capture at the fall of Vicksburt, Henry rejoined his regiment near Mission Ridge and took part in that battle and the battle at Look-Out Mountain, Tennessee.  He was captured in battle at Big Shanty, Georgia, June 15, 1864, as his brigade, under the command of General Baker, fought towards Atlanta.   He was transported to the military prison at Rock Island Barracks, Illinois, where he remained for the duration of the war.  He was released on June 21, 1865, having served just over a year as a prisoner of war.  Following the war, he married Salina Caroline Clay, and settled in Scott County, Mississippi, where they raised 10 children.  He died March 20, 1935, at age 93, and is buried in the Hillsboro Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lipscomb was born in 1828 and died in 1909,he was also the Constable of Charlotte County,Virginia in 1861 and again in 1865.
