The information on this page comes from The Witch's Magical Handbook, by Gavin & Yvonne Frost. Making Medicine Bags As many of our great-grandmothers, Native Americans & witches will tell you, medicine bags, (sometimes referred to as healing pouches or charm bags) especially those charged in rituals, are powerful adjuncts to conventional medical, psychiatric or psychological treatment. They affect the psychic cause of physical or mental illness, thereby eliminating the root problem which manifests in symptoms. They are never to be used, however, as a substitute for proper diet and general care of the mundane body. Medicine bags supplement, not replace, the care of trained, licensed health care professionals. The table below shows suggested correspondences for healing pouches by illness and types of chant that can be used in ritual when making & charging such pouches. If making a medicine bag for someone other than yourself, as would be the case for any other talisman, amulet, spell or ritual, using a photo of that person helps immensely in focusing energy. As always, it is wise to ask permission if your work is for another. The suggested colors may be used for candles lit in empowering rituals and/or as the colors for pouches themselves. Scents suggested may be used in the pouches and/or to annoint candles used in ritual. After charging a medicine bag, it may be worn on a cord or chain around the neck, on a belt around the waist, or tucked inside undergarments. | illness | herb | flower | stone/crystal | metal | color | scent | chant pronunciation | chant pitch | chant speed | | ulcer, epilepsy, diarrhea | winter savory | buttercup | aquamarine | pewter | violet | lemon | aye-oh | very high, wailing, spirituoso | very fast | | insomnia, cancerous tumor, irritation | thrift | water lily | amethyst | zinc | lavender | lily | aum | low, largo, resonant hum | slow | | arthritis, depression, exhaustion, blood pressure | anemone | geranium | ruby | bronze | scarlet | tobacco | ka-ka-ka | high, sharp, staccato | fast | | polio, melancholy, tuberculosis | ground-ivy | cowslip | jade | nickel | red | sandalwood | gay-ah | low, largo, resonant hum | slow | | constipation, hepatitis, diabetes | lavender | orchid | opal | aluminum | yellow | clove | ah-bra | very high, wailing, spirituoso | very fast | | bronchitis, digestion, circulation | poppy | night-scented stock | pearl | silver | amber | narcissus | homm | medium, legato, flowing | medium | | mononucleosis, cramps, thyroid | rosemary | sunflower | diamond | gold | orange | rose | mm-mm | low, largo, resonant hum | slow | | cerebral palsy, retardation | caraway | snowdrop | agate | mercury amalgam | chartreuse | cinnamon | mu-ah | medium, legato, flowing | medium | | fever, hypertension, blood disease | alkanet | rose | emerald | copper | emerald | myrtle | aye-oh | low, largo, resonant hum | slow | | impotence, muscle tension | sweet basil | cactus | turquoise | platinum | turquoise | orange blossom | yah-weh | medium, legato, flowing | medium | | shingles, goiter | balm | narcissus | sapphire | tin | blue | nutmeg | aye-oh-em | high, sharp, staccato | fast | | glaucoma, palsy | barley | thistle | onyx | lead | indigo | civet from onion | aye-oh | very high, wailing, spirituoso | very fast |
