"Why English is a Freely Chosen Free Market Language"

William Hart explains why English has succeeded and will continue to succeed.

No one ever forced any American to learn English and there never was a law requiring it. That is why English succeeded and everything else failed. English was chosen and accepted freely and democratically. Those oriented to freedom of choice will prevent any laws requiring English only from ever being enacted. Sensible people oppose "English Only" laws because they can abridge the rights of individuals who are not proficient in English, and because they perpetuate false stereotypes of immigrants and non-English speakers. Everyone in the USA are given the opportunity to learn English, and the freedom to speak whatever language they wish. No one requires or legislates what language will be used on the Internet, but since the very best software and technical people are in the USA and English is in fact the universal language of science it makes sense that things on line are as they are. Common sense dictated that it worked best and it was universally and freely adopted with great results that never once stopped cultural diversity in the USA.

No government has any business dictating language policy to anyone. Governments and all individuals have the right to freely choose the language they use on the basis of what best serves its customers in economic terms. Europeans are the only people and places that legislate what languages shall be used and the Swiss and French are the worst of the lost of these idiotic socialistic governments that attempt to legislate anachronistic xenophobic nonsense.

Language has long been falsely equated with cultural clout - the "perfect instrument of empire," as Spain's Queen Isabella was said to have been told by an obviously theocratic religious adviser. It is a political and religious ploy atypical of the USA. Xenophobic active movements attempting to artificially leverage language for power have surged worldwide and they are failing due to the spread of science, technology and the Internet.

English is first on the Internet and in science because it succeeded and no one forced it. "English First" is not a socialist or communist law. It is a statement of universally accepted fact...and sour grapes to the paternalistic xenophobes of earth. English is the mother tongue of academic, literary and scientific success. The world learned Catalan culture by reading Ernest Hemingway's "Death in the Afternoon" in English just as Nobel Prizes in Literature get translated and reveal the best of earth in the best economic formats. English accepted voluntarily created a market of which the losers and xenophobes of earth envy in futility.

Technological optimists are correct and they know very well that full automatic translation will soon be available, so the ridiculous "French" styled political issues will disappear while European regionalists and separatists want all languages to get equal status, with hundreds of official garbage and obscure horse-manure languages in Europe alone. Guess which is going to happen? The multiplicity of languages is now and always was an absurdly evil source of conflict. It should be overcome by a universal language, since it is well known that there is not one iota of evidence to support wild and absurd claims by European xenophobes that culture is a part of language.

All science and anthropology including cultural psychology say the exact opposite of the European xenophobes who are always fighting and legislating everything under the sun. Had they not "legislated" they might be normal place to live versus being authoritarian socialist madhouses and economic quagmires. Everyone knows that dream images, signs and symbols are common to all people. Consider the real truth in this quotation: "An object or feeling ...is not verbal, is not words...Anyone who misses that--and it is unfortunately easily missed--will miss one of the most important psychologic factors in all semantic reactions underlying sanity.

This omission is facilitated greatly by the older systems, habits of thought, older semantic reactions, and, above all, by the primitive structure of our Aristotelian language and the 'is' of identity. Thus, for instance, we handle what we call a pencil. Whatever we handle is un-speakable; yet we say 'this is a pencil,' which statement is unconditionally false to facts, because the object appears as an absolute individual and is not words. Children understand road signs no matter what language they have! Every record of images in dreams shows universality in them so language xenophobia is simple xenophobic political leverage. English is the only specific language is associated with a superior political philosophy, or social system. It should become the universal language. We all can order Pizza or Szechuan Chicken in English. Those who live in the USA know very well that the cultural diversity of the USA is incredible with none of the dishwater drudgery of isolated corners of earth where one narrow perspective limits everyone and no other cultures are known. Those writing in English will have a chance of reaching a world audience and achieving �classic status� because economics do count and few translations except those from English to other languages will be commercially viable. Things that do not work and self-sustain become extinct appropriately. Anyone who wishes to be an "expert" in Sanskrit surely can do so, but few care to listen, hear, or even think about such anachronistic nuances.

"Official" and "enforced" or "official bi-lingualism" or "official multi-lingualism must be abandoned in favor of freedom of choice in language everywhere on earth exactly like in the USA, or everyone will be doomed to a bitter never-ending Babel styled European nonsensical political conflict resulting in increased intolerance, division, racism, and even violence with hapless taxpayers footing the bills for the legislated absurdity. The USA makes it all voluntary and no absurdity results. The mission to help improve the teaching of English to immigrants, and to allow them to enjoy the economic opportunities available in this country requires English for success as it was democratically and universally adopted freely. Everyone should study language policy and its effects around the world, so we can apply the lessons learned through the experiences of other countries to the United States. They failed. The USA succeeded.

No one legislated anything...except the Europeans, and their common failures all were and still are legislated exactly as in Nazism, Fascism, Socialism, Communism, and lately pro and con Islam, exactly as there is trouble everywhere on earth where freedom is "legislated" by political and religious xenophobes contrary to any economic sense at all. America is not an Arabic or Islamic theocracy or political quagmire like Switzerland or France where languages are legislated by force of law versus free choice and a free market for language. Automatic translation will come to be decent when it is economically viable and necessary. That is something that European ideological xenophobes have yet to understand.
