| Fungi, a unique type of music created in the British Virgin Islands, can be described as a melodious and infectious mix of string percussion and wind instruments. The music is one of the last links to African culture in the BVI. Fungi rhythms have been performed by BVI villagers since the mid-1700s at harvest time and during the Christmas holidays. Today, the music plays an integral role in the festival celebrations of the BVI. The post-emancipation August festivities make Fungi more important to BVI natives. |
