  • Red Feather Development Group seeks volunteers to help tribe members of the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Montana and the Hopi Reservation in Arizona build straw bale homes. Fees are $250 per person for one week (minimum), $50 for each additional week, plus a one-time $25 Red Feather membership fee. This covers food, lodging, and sanitation services. Volunteers are required to bring a short list of basic construction tools (tool belt, tape measure, etc.) Costs and expenses such as transportation to the reservation are tax-deductible.

Navajo 'green developers' look to tradition for inspiration

What if the Diné got it right the first time?

"Before HUD," as Tony Skrelunas likes to say, Navajos lived in small, energy-efficient homes built of local materials, spent most of their time outside in the summer, and knew their neighbors--in fact, they were probably related to them.

If the green communities movement had been around back then, Navajos could have been its poster children.

"The traditional Navajo family was living very sustainably," said Skrelunas, director of the Grand Canyon Trust's Native American Program and a management team member of the new Navajo-owned development company Keya Earth. http://www.keyaearth.com/ http://www.keyaearth.com/home

Solar architecture projects -
A site of real and virtual (computer-generated) solar architecture projects with heavy emphasis on Native American influences, designs, and uses, by New Mexico solar architect Dennis Holloway. Especially interesting is the project by Holloway and Navajo archaeologist Dr. Charles Cambridge that built 3 demonstration solar hogans on the University of Colorado campus (Boulder).
