Here Are Some Articles About Gabriel Morency That Have Appeared In The Montreal Mirror In The Past Couple Years...The First Of Which Is The Most Recent.

Rage on radio

Team 990's Gabriel Morency has a mouth that roars but says callers are the stars

When Gabriel Morency was first hauled home to Melrose Avenue in NDG 32 years ago, nobody said, "This child will be the one who finally brings punk sensibilities to sports talk radio."

But somebody probably should have. A mere 16 years into his tender life, Morency found himself turning his back on his hockey hobby to tour with his band Corrupted Youth. "I was always like a metalhead-fuckin'-crossover-punker," says Morency, who grew up with a French father and an English mama. After a dozen years fronting another band, Homicide, Morency grabbed the talk radio mic 16 months back with his own brand of nightly nihilism on CFMB. Then, last November, the big leagues came calling.

"The Team 990 was hurting for local broadcasting, their ratings were piss poor, they were simulcasting this crap from Toronto that nobody cared about," he says. "They took a chance on me because I was very controversial. I said horrible things on the radio."

Morency was advised to apply to 990 with his tamest demo. Instead, "I gave them my most hardcore show in its entirety." He was rewarded with the Sports Rage program, which airs weeknights at 11p.mThe show is his platform to target his personal villains, ranging from Expo-bashing local media to Shania Twain, whom he calls "a frizzy-haired DuMaurier-smoking Ontarian. The only difference between her and a hooker," he opines, "is none."

The Wellington Street resident, whose grandfather played a few games with the Habs and whose uncle, Curt Brackenbury, once broke Mario Tremblay's nose, now brags that he logs more hours on air than any other local radio figure. He expects to uncork some bubbly when his first-ever rating book comes out forthwith.

"On my show, the callers are the stars and the listener demographic is everybody," he says. "It's from little kids to 92-year-old ladies, because I say what other guys on the radio don't have the balls to say."

Another Article About Gabriel From The Montreal Hour , Can be seen by

**I have made minor adjustments to the following article which originally appeared in the montreal mirror.**

Name: Gabriel Morency

Nickname: Gabbio

Age: 32

Occupation: Sports radio jock

Salary: Modest.

Academic credentials: Graduate of both The Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and The Montreal Radio and Television School.

Bio: This spunky downtown resident and inspiration for the Grim Skunk mega-hit "Looking for Gabbio" has been shaking the local sports radio scene to its very core lately with his Sports Rage Talk show on Team 990 AM. A self-confessed "AM radio junkie" and ex-guitarist/singer for early 1990s speed metal sensations Homicide, Gabriel’s radio style has been described as a cross between Jim Rome and Howard Stern. Sponsored by an Internet casino, his show is especially popular with "young people" and among the betting population, who faithfully tune him in to pick up the latest hot gambling tips. "Gambling on sports is magical, it’s electric, it makes you feel like you’re really part of it. We win people money on this show."

When he’s on the air: Monday - Friday 8-11pm on Team 990 AM (Formely Sports Weekly On CFMB 1280)

Why he feels his show is such a phenomenon: "Because we do stuff that the commercial stations wouldn’t touch. Radio in this town is so sterile that young people are turned off by it. What does it say about the Montreal radio market when the best station in town is from Vermont?"

Some bands he plays on his show when he isn’t busy yakking about José Canseco or some spectacular save Ken Dryden made in 1972: Korn, Motörhead.

Somebody he really looks up to: Local sports loudmouth Ted Tevan. "Ted Tevan is the icon and he’s very underrated. He hasn’t received the love that he deserves from this city because he’s not afraid to speak his mind."

How to beat the seven-second delay so you can say something stupid like "Bababooey" to him on the air: Speak intelligently at first, gain his confidence, and then, when he is least expecting it, throw out your offensive pearls of wisdom.

Childhood ambition: To become a pro hockey player.

Something his grandfather did: Played for the Montreal Canadiens in the late 1930s.

Something his uncle did: Played hockey in the NHL.

Something Gabriel almost did: Play pro hockey in England. But the offer came in at the same time his band was preparing to tour with DRI, so he opted for a career in heavy metal instead.

Hobbies: Playing sports. Gabriel is rumoured to be one ass-kicking street basketball player.

Musical preferences: Metallica, Korn, Linkin Park, 50 Cent

Last book read: Gotti: Rise and Fall, by Jerry Capeci and Gene Mustain.

Words of wisdom: "Don’t be afraid to go for it."
