Mold Testing Kits

Medical studies have found that mold is the #1 cause of allergic symptoms. The black mold Stachybotrys found in home, office and school environments has been linked to fatal pulmonary disorders.

Our simple do-it-yourself test which indicates the presence of molds within 48 hours. Optional lab analysis is available, which identifies the exact count and type of mold present.

PRO-LAB's Mold Test Kit utilizes patented laboratory analytical method for accuracy and reliability.

  • Discoloration or mold on baseboards, wallboards, or wallpaper.
  • Cracks in shower tile, lack of caulking, loose toilet seal, leaks under sink
  • Carpet and padding in direct contact with concrete slab
  • Poorly maintained or dirty air conditioning/heating vents and filters
  • Damp basement or crawl space
  • Water penetration (water marks on walls, mold spots on walls)
  • Musty/ moldy odor

If you answered YES to any of the above questions, then you could be EXPOSED TO TOXIC MOLD!
What is Mold and Where Is It Found?

Molds are microscopic organisms, found virtually everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Molds can be found on plants, foods, dry leaves, and other organic material. Also susceptible to mold growth are cellulose materials, such as, cardboard, paper, ceiling tiles, and sheet rock. Mold spores are easily detached and made airborne by vacuuming, walking on a carpet or sitting on a couch. In indoor environments, mold can grow in air conditioning ducts, carpets, pots of houseplants, etc.

How Can Mold Affect Your Health?

Exposure to mold is not healthy for anyone but the following individuals are at a higher risk for adverse health effects: infants, children, elderly, immune compromised patients, pregnant women, and individuals with existing respiratory conditions. When inhaled, even in small amounts, mold can cause a wide range of health problems including respiratory problems (wheezing), nasal and sinus congestion, watery and red eyes, nose and throat irritation, skin irritation, aches and pains, fevers, asthma, emphysema and in some cases even death.

Mold spore and mold colony sampling.

These sampling methods are not for medical purposes, they are intended to test your home or office for mold spores and to help identify suspected mold gowth.

DIRECTIONS ( easy gel setup)

1. Place the petri dish on a level surface with the lid side up.
DO NOT TOUCH the inside of the petri dish or expose it to outside
air until you are ready to use it.

2. Lift the lid of the petri dish and pour the mold medium into the
dish bottom. Replace the lid and swirl gently until the bottom is completely
covered. Allow to set for exactly 45 minutes on a level surface.

3. Determine which sampling method you would like to use.

Note: you may conduct only one sampling per petri dish.

Method 1: Swab sampling
Method 1: Swab sampling
a. After you have completed the easy gel setup, locate the visual mold growth.
b. Take a sterile swab and wipe the tip across the mold growth. (Be sure you get mold on the swab tip.)
c. Lift the lid of the petri dish and
very gently wipe the mold sample from the tip of the swab across the top surface of the medium on the Petri dish, allowing the mold to adhere.
d. Once sampling is completed, replace the lid and proceed to the lab results directions.

Swab sample of bathroom tile. The mold was clearly visable to the eye after 48 hours. This plate incubated for 72 hours for photographic purpose

Swab sample of carpet 48 hours incubation.

Method 2: HVAC air sampling ( electrical tape required)

a. After you have completed the easy gel setup, locate the air vent which is the furthest away from the main HVAC system.
b. Lift the lid of the petri dish and tape the open dish against the open air vent. Close all of the remaining air vents that are on the system.
c. Turn the system fan on high for a ten (10) minute period, allowing the forced air to hit the inside surface of the petri dish.
d. Once the ten (10) minute period is complete, remove the petri dish from the air vent, replace the lid and proceed to the lab results directions.

Method 3: Settling plate air sampling
a. After you have completed the easy gel setup, set the petri dish on a stable surface in the
room where you want to sample. The floor is best.
b. It is necessary to fan or vacuum a room before taking this type of sample. Close all windows be sure to move the air under all furniture, the carpet should be vacuumed for at least 10 minutes be sure to get all corners. Close air vents so that you do not get mold spores from the air ducts.(To test your air ducts use method 2)
c. Lift the lid of the petri dish and leave it open for a one (1) hour.
d When the one(1) hour period is complete, replace the lid.

Settling Plate of bedroom after water leak. 1 hour sample time 96 hours incubation.

Settling Plate bedroom walk-in closet. 1 hour sampling time. 96 hours incubation.

Store the easy gel dish in a cool place out of direct sunlight for 48-72 hours.

You will see mold colonies grow. For method 2 and 3 you should have no more than 5 - 10 colonies. If you have more than 10 colonies start by cleaning your air ducts and carpet with appropriate methods.
