‘Flip, Flop ‘n’ Fly’, as the name may or not suggest, is, in fact, a quartet. From a long, bitter apprenticeship, working the boggy, clay plains of the Cambridgeshire fen, they have valiantly tacked their weary way from one European cultural capital to another, finally arriving like a glamorous shopping bag (Paris, London, Milan) full of goodies just for you…. Once installed in your local hostelry or CD player, their resolve is firm and simple: to deliver a ridiculously spontaneous, levity-packed punch that will have you demanding more ale and more volume in short order.

More helpfully, it should be noted that  ‘Flip, Flop ‘n’ Fly’-the words are not member- specific but freely interchangeable, depending on individual performance on the night – comprise STEVE WRIGHT (ex-Jump, Bump ‘n’ Boogie) sorting out the black from the white notes on the piano, NICK (London Calling) WATSON, threading his fingers effortlessly through guitar strings, RICHARD ASHMAN, supplying a ludicrous assortment of props, prostheses and percussion, and, finally, but by no means leastly, STEVE LOCKWOOD, seasoned vet of many bands (Jump, Bump ‘n’ Boogie, The Stormed and Shakin’ Vacs) and long-time connoisseur of the chrome gobstopper or harmonica. The four pals sing either serially or in joyful harmony and are fully capable of playing their instruments while so doing. Each band member comes fully equipped with bouncy banter, jolly japes and merry wheezes that will keep you cackling for hours.

“What sort of music do you play, then?” I hear a perfectly reasonable young woman ask, lolling just next to the bricked-in fireplace in the saloon bar. Well, yes, I thought you might ask that old chestnut. If I were to say a little Porter and a dash of Gershwin, I could not be accused of a falsehood. Furthermore, an occasional original number in the style of a 1940’s boogie-woogie meister would be equally candid and to the point. I might even elaborate further and include vintage rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm  ‘n’ blues and down-home Delta Mississippi swamp-soul, but that, I fear, would be pushing it…

So, just listen up, get down and give that handbag a good dancin’ round!

LIVE IN CONCERT

HISTORY
Not so long ago, only a few years ago to be honest, in a public house in Cambridge UK, these chaps met during a jam session. They formed a band with other eager musicians called JUMP, BUMP 'N' BOOGIE. The band, run by Michael Carpenter is still available for bookings click here

Flip Flop N Fly were later formed to play local resturants and small venues. The band being very funny on stage (so they thought) and playing an unpredictable mix of Jazz, Blues and Boogie with smatterings of original material from all players.

Finaly six years later, the trio recorded both live and studio recordings with Nick Watson who added a new dimension to their sound and therefore joined the band straight away, some of these are available on this page and there will be an album available in the near future - watch this space.
The boys have recorded a concert on the 22nd of November 2003 the CD is available now
