Get an extra set of car keys and hide them.

Start a hidden emergency fund, even if its only one or two dollars stashed away per week.

A suitcase with a couple changes of clothes for you and your children. Leave it with a trusted friend or hide it where your partner will not look. Include your marriage license and birth certificates and social security cards for everyone who will leave with you.

If packing a suitcase is not possible, fill a dresser drawer or a box with what you may need. Don't overpack. It may tip your abusive partner off.

Develop a plan for calling for help. Use the police in an emergency. You can explain to your children about dialing 911. Tell them they can run to a neighbor's house if they can't get to a phone. If you trust one of your neighbors, you may develop a signal system so they know you need help.

Know that it is important to forgive yourself and be ready to take assertive action to protect yourself and your children now.
