Reported in Cyprus Today September 28th-October 4th 2002
To solve the traffic problems caused around Girne, a proposed bypass has been drawn up with construction due to start possibly early 2003.
Please see the map in the pictures section, but there will be compulsory purchase orders placed on property in the way of the new road.
The fees paid by the Government will be based on general market values, but not on the purchase price paid for the property.
It has been a project some 15 years in the making and is currently with the Land Registry who are undertaking feasibilty studies, the expropiation of 8.2 kilometres of land has been approved.
Unfortunately some house buyers will not have been aware of the proposed route as it is disclosed at planning permission stage not when an existing home has been bought.
A new petrol station is currently being built just where the route leaves the coast road, so possibly this route is getting near a start date.(February 2003)
