Frequenty Asked Questions

What are NPCs and can I use them?:

NPCs are non playing characters - characters that may appear in a thread but are not a part of the main party: the locals, the tavern owners, and often the bad guys  It is important to remember that whoever creates the NPC has final say over what happens to that person - and this means players are NOT permitted to kill named NPCs they did not create.

In some cases, the player who creates the NPC will request that only s/he may play the NPC, in which case players should treat the NPC as they would a PC.  They should, therefore, not dictate the NPCs actions.  Usually, these sorts of NPCs are central to the plot.

Some NPCs, while created  by a single player, may be allowed for use by any player in that thread.  Usually these will be tavern owner and the likes.

Other NPCs are more broadly useable; for example, those listed under 'NPCs - A brief Who's Who!'.  These characters are generally locals of an area, and may be used by any player.  The only rule pertaining to use is that players do not significantly change the character in any way and remain true to the information posted in the profile.  All players are allowed to add new NPCs to the list, though are not required to do so when posting an NPC in a thread.  If you wish to give a more detailed acount of an NPC, then a profile may also be submitted in the usual character profile list, adding NPC in brackets after that character's name.

It is important to note that some threads (usually those which are heavily moderated or run by one person) may not permit the use of NPCs in a thread (other than those controlled by the moderator or Loremaster).  Usually this will be stated by the creator of the thread, but if you find yourself unsure, feel free to ask before hand.

Can I have more than one character?:

Yes you can.  Tales of Adventure does not put restrictions on how many characters a single member has.

Can I have the same character in more than one thread?:

Yes, you are allowed.  This is usually left to a member's own discretion, however, because it can occasionally be difficult for timelines.  If you think you can handle it, go ahead - just be careful not to meet yourself!

Do I have to set my thread in one of the cities/lands of Tales of Adventure?

No.  The lands and cities described on the site are a starting point but don't have to be used.  They are a small fraction of the world.  If you wish your thread to be set in the lands round Ebonloch, or one of the cities detailed under references, please use the Wilderness message board.  If you wish to set your thread elswhere (as in your own made-up world), please use the Undiscovered Lands message board.  The undiscovered lands message board is also used for misc. threads, such as those set in a modern-day or future environment.  Because Tales is a primarily a medieval rp, you must seek permission to run a thread of this type (an email or message on the ooc board will do).  The managers reserve the right to deny your request, though we're pretty open minded here.

Jargon Guide:

      • IC:  Stands for "In character".  When ever you write from the point of view of one of your characters, this is what it is referred to.
      • OOC: Stands for "Out of character".  Generally used on OOC message boards.  Sometimes it is necessary to leave an ooc message with your ic post.  In this case, IC and OOC are used to denote which part of the post is which.  Some players may use double brackets to denote ooc messages
      • RL/IRL: Stands for "real life" and "in real life" respectively
      • Thread:  This is the collective name given to a series of posts; like a story-board.
      • PC: Playing character.  Another name for the character played by an individual member.  These character's profiles are found under Character Profiles on the side bar.
      • NPC: Non-playing character.  These are characters that may be present in a thread for short periods of time but are not a PC.  Please see question entitled 'What are NPCs and can I use them?'

If you are unsure of any of the terminology used on the message boards, please feel free to ask.  These are just some of the more general ones used.

** If you have a question not noted here, please post it on the General Message Board, where it will be addressed by a Manager or Assistant Manager.  Thanks!**
