As described by TAMA: "Superstar drums were originally offered until 1986, when they were replaced by more up-to-date drums. Birch shells contributed to their popularity and much sought after warm sound"
TAMA's description of Superstars from their 1978 catalog states: "TAMA Superstar - today's wood drum. Made of select and cured rock maple and birch in a special "Heat Compression," mold. In addition to the Heat Compression process, all the seams in TAMA Superstar drums are staggered around the perimeter of the shell to avoid any weak spots. Superstar drums have the strength and durability to hold up to the road. And, they've got a sound and volume not common to wood drums."
