Healthy Betta

 Unhealthy Betta

 Has a healthy appetite.

Has lost all interest in food, or may choose to spit out his food after he's eaten it.

Swims around fluidly, often, and is generally active.

Betta may act lethargic; will lay at the bottom, or on a leaf more often than he's swimming, may hover at the surface.

Is full of color and vibrance.

May change to a lighter color than usual, yellow or gray, possibly brown. Color is duller than usual.

All scales are smooth and evenly placed.

Scales may stick out like a pine cone.

Eyes are vibrant, alert to his surroundings.

One or both eyes are protruding, cloudy, or swollen.

All fins are spread out, from tip to tip, when active.

Fins are clamped, have holes in them, or may be shredding.

 Stomach area looks normal.

Stomach looks swollen or engorged, or hollow.

Gills are functioning normally. The looks of them are normal as well.

Gill(s) stick out, may be swollen or inflamed. Possibly bleeding.

 Body looks smooth and slick.

Body may have open sores, white cottony patches (fungus), spots, or a "dust like" coating
