The name of Washington dates back to Anglo-Saxon times but it is now best known for its links with George Washington the first President of the United States. His family derived its name when William de Hertburn (Hartburn) settled here in the 12th century and assumed the name of William de Wessynton (Washington). It is not know whether he built the house at that time or aquired it ready built. By the end of the 14th century the Washington family had dispersed arround the country. The branch of the family which produced George Washington settled in Lancashire due to the marriage of Robert, great great grandson of the first Washington to Joan de Strickland of Sizergh Castle.
