Boulder Colorado is lucky to be the host city of many unique events, but The Shoot Out Boulder is a festival that will be unique in the nation. No city anywhere in the USA has a fast and furious 24-hour filmmaking contest that takes advantage of advances in technology and the determination of a few good filmmakers. The Shoot Out Boulder returns again on October 10-12, 2008! Like all shoot outs, the first step is to show up! The Shoot Out Boulder is open to anyone with a camera and a dream. NOTE NEW TIME: On October 10, 2008, starting at 4:00 PM, in front of the Courthouse, the pre-registered teams will start showing up. At precisely 5:55pm, they will be given a list of eleven items (specific to Boulder, not necessarily locations) from which they must select a minimum of five to use in their film. All eleven items are within 5-10 minutes, so bring some good walking shoes. This is a rain or shine event, so in inclement weather remember to keep yourself and your equipment covered, and keep in mind that your sound quality will likely be affected. Basic Shoot Out Rules are: Film must run no more then 7 minutes, including titles and credits. Editing must be done in camera. You have only 24 hours to complete your film, from Fri at 6pm to Sat at 6pm. This final deadline must be meet, no exceptions! USE OF COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS You must hold the music copyright or create your own music. All copyrights are the Producer's responsibility and may need to be obtained prior to the event. The Shoot Out takes no responsibility for any breaches of copyright. There are many resources available to filmmakers for music (i.e. online), but in the spirit of the event, we encourage you to create your own music by working with a composer or musician. The producer of the entered film must hold copyright for music, voice over, images and performances. These copyrights are the Producer's responsibility and may need to be obtained prior to the event. The Shoot Out takes no responsibility for any breaches of copyright. If you violate these rules, then we can't show your film. Filmmakers must use 5 of the 11 possible mandatory locations or props. One of the items must appear in the first thirty seconds of the film. Filmmaker must supply final dub on MiniDV tape supplied. -It should be noted that the Producer of the film is the owner of that film. Any sales negotiations with third parties will be the responsibility of the film's producer. -The films shown to the industry judges and the public during the weekend are selected and programmed by the preliminary judging panel whose selections are based on each film's overall quality in technique and creativity. The Executive Director nor his staff members play any role in the judging selection except to faciliate the process. What is In Camera Editing Definition? Films must be shot in sequence, i.e. produced in a linear manner (NO EDITING). This means that teams may rewind tape, preview and tape over what was last shot. You can insert edit if your camera allows it. Teams may not edit, i.e. CAN NOT USE an editing suite, any method that views it through monitor or by connecting several cameras or VTRs together, or use of a computer or any other technology other than the one camera used to shoot the video/film. The purpose of the competition is to foster and encourage creativity, i.e. the idea of the film and its execution, rather than the technology used to make it slick. Dubbing of voice over or music is allowed. The soundtrack that is dubbed onto your film can be edited material. But under no circumstances can the sound be edited onto your vision. It must be DUBBED. JUDGING & AWARDS NOTE NEW TIME: The judging will be done by respected members of the film and arts community based on an established set of criteria from the Shoot Out committee. Top 10 films will be announced Sunday, Oct. 12 starting at 1 PM at The Boulder Theater. Doors open at NOON. The top ten videos will screen that afternoon, and awards will be given in many categories.
