Welcome to.... The Jefferson Davis Entourage This monument of Jefferson Davis marks the site where, on 9 May 1865, the Confederate President was captured by Federal forces while attempting to flee to Texas to reorganise the government and Confederate resistance. On 9 May 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis, along with a small entourage of compatriots, was captured near the present day site of Irwinville, Georgia. He was attempting to flee to Texas where he hoped to organise Confederate guerilla resistance that would extend the war long enough that the Confederacy would be able to sue for peace under honourable terms. This is a site for die-hard Confederates who, like Jefferson Davis, refuse to surrender. It is also a site for study and discussion about the life of this remarkable American. |
