Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have spent years lovingly reading and sorting through the numerous files left by Frank Herbert. They uncovered much of his private correspondence with legendary SF editor John Campbell, original notes for Dune and what would become its sequels, never-before-published chapters and articles written by Frank, and much more. A large portion of these findings, along with original introductions and short stories by Brian Herbert and

Kevin J. Anderson, have been collected for the first time in THE ROAD TO DUNE. The contents include:

  • “Spice Planet” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, a short story based on the detailed notes left by Frank Herbert;
  • “They Stopped the Moving Sands ” by Frank Herbert, the unpublished magazine article about sand dunes that planted the seed for Dune;
  • Correspondence between Frank Herbert and his agent, editors, and glimpses of the various rejection letters he received about Dune;
  • Unpublished chapters and scenes from Dune and Dune Messiah;
  • Scenes from Frank Herbert’s draft Dune film script;
  • Four original short stories by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson;
  • And much, much more

Although forty years have passed since Frank Herbert wrote his first Dune novel, the sands of time have not diminished the impact this powerful and groundbreaking epic has had on the evolution of SF—and millions of readers. THE ROAD TO DUNE is the perfect companion to any of the earlier books in the Dune universe, providing greater understanding of the world and its creator, Frank Herbert.

Book Description

Including never-before-published chapters from Dune and Dune Messiah, original stories, and a new short novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

Frank Herbert's Dune is widely known as the science fiction equivalent of The Lord of the Rings, and The Road to Dune is a companion work comparable to The Silmarillion, shedding light on and following the remarkable development of the bestselling science fiction novel of all time.

Herein, the world's millions of Dune fans can now read---at long last---the unpublished chapters and scenes from Dune and Dune Messiah. The Road to Dune also includes the original correspondence between Frank Herbert and famed editor John W. Campbell, Jr.; excerpts from Herbert's correspondence during his years-long struggle to get his innovative work published; and the article "They Stopped the Moving Sands," Herbert's original inspiration for Dune.

The Road to Dune features newly discovered papers and manuscripts of Frank Herbert, and also "Spice Planet," an original sixty-thousand-word short novel by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, based on a detailed outline left by Frank Herbert.

The Road to Dune is a treasure trove of essays, articles, and fiction that every reader of Dune will want to add to their shelf.
I've just sent Brian Herbert all the pieces and the third edit for The Road To Dune and I've delivered the final manuscript for Scattered Suns, book four of The Saga of Seven Suns," started Anderson. "I'm currently at work on the fifth Saga book, Of Fire & Night. The series is projected to run to six or seven novels but I know where it ends, so the novels won't drag on endlessly. However, it's a big universe and I could always develop other storylines, too." Scattered Suns is due to be published in July 2005 by Simon & Schuster UK.

"The Road To Dune," Anderson continued, "is something equivalent to The Silmarillion in the Dune universe. It collects four short stories Brian and I have written, and a short novel based on Frank Herbert's proto-Dune outline, 'Spice Planet'. There's also unpublished chapters from Dune and Dune Messiah, and key new scenes from a massive 240-page movie script Frank wrote as his own adaptation of Dune. Roads will probably be published in Autumn 2005. Meanwhile, we're starting work on the huge two-volume Hunters Of Dune and Sandworms Of Dune, based directly on Frank's Dune 7 outline."

Anderson and Herbert have written six volume together now. "We've got our writing methods and routines down pat and working very efficiently," said Anderson. "'Spice Planet' was a collaborative exercise like the previous novels; the rest of The Road To Dune, though, was more a job of sifting through boxes and boxes of papers and notes, comparing draft manuscripts, and finding chapters that had never before been seen."

Anderson enjoys collaborating on novels. In fact, he's also embarking on a brand new collaboration with horror writer Dean Koontz on a four book series about Frankenstein which HarperCollins UK have just bought. But The Saga of Seven Suns he has penned himself. Did he find it a lonely exercise?

"Lonely? Hardly!" he said. "I've always split my time between collaborations and solo novels. I enjoy the brainstorming and interaction with a collaborator, leapfrogging the creative process...but on the other hand, sometimes it's great just to make up your own mind and follow your own path. The Saga of Seven Suns is my baby, and I am quite thrilled with how it's turning out - and just as thrilled to see how successful it's being in the UK. I hope that readers who enjoy my Dune prequels with Brian will also try this new series."
