SACS Cleenbore Cleaning Kit Review

–       by Paul E. Britton

Recently, I were asked to review a new gun cleaning system by Cleenbore USA.  Matt Lanigan send me one of  the Cleenbore Products, Small Arms Cleaning System (SACS).  This is a new cleaning system that uses compressed CO2 cartridges to propel a polymer cleaning/oiling wad down the bore.

Here's a picture of what the kit looks like:

Looking over the kit, I was very skeptical about it's utility - it seemed like a lazy man's method of cleaning, offering no real advantage.  Well I finally got a chance to clean my rifles with it, and let me say that my initial impressions were TOTALLY WRONG.

After shooting about 800 rounds (including some dirty Wolf ammo Forest shot ) through my M4, and two 20" AR's, I had planned on cleaning one with the system, and using my beloved Otis cleaning kit on the other two.  I selected the M4 for my test weapon.  After stripping the gun, I took the Otis chamber brush and cleaned the chamber.  I then attached the angled wad adapter to the cylinder holder, loaded up a wad with the special Scotchbrite pad on the end, added a drop of clp, inserted it into the barrel and pulled the trigger.  Out popped a dirty wad.  I ran a second, then a couple of wads without the Scotchbrite.   All this in probably less than a minute.   I pulled out a bore light, and took a look.   Clean!   I was really surprised at how well it had done, and how fast and easy it is.  Afterall, I think the Otis kits are some of the best cleaning kits on the market, but using the patches and cable isn't nearly as easy as the wad shooter.

The wads:

So I grabbed one of the 20" guns and tried it again.  Same drill, 2 w/Scotchbrite, 2 w/out.  Clean bore.   For the third gun, I decided to follow the directions a bit more strictly and only run one Scotchbrite wad down the bore, followed by two standard wads.   Clean bore.

I have to say, I am very, very impressed with the ease and the results.   This system doesn't even require that you disassemble the weapon, you can just open the chamber and shoot the wads down the barrel.  What a great and easy way to shoot one, clean, shoot one, clean when breaking in a new barrel (non-chromelined).

One hint for the user, don't try and get the wads all the way into the adapter.  It's not necessary.

Here's a picture of how far I loaded them:

Overall, I'm very impressed with the ease and effectiveness.    This compact kit is great for the range box, or great for the home cleaning kit.   The price is in line with other premium kits, such as the Otis, and the expected life of the 16 gram CO2 cartridge is around 25 uses with the smaller caliber .223 adapter and around 6 to 8 uses with the 12 gauge shotgun adapter.

At the end of cleaning my three rifles, I felt like I wasn't done - it just didn't take long enough, and wasn't as much work as usual.  I will definitely be getting some more adapters and pads for my other calibers.
