Classical  Indian  Dances

The science of Indian classical dance is known as  ' Natya Shastra '.  In the Hindu triology, there are three major Gods - Brahma ( The creator ), Vishnu ( The provider ) and Shiva ( The destroyer ) and three major godesses - Lakshmi ( The goddess of wealth ),   Saraswati ( The goddess of knowledge ) and Parvati ( The goddess of security & health ). Traditionally, most dance forms in India are connected to the great Hindu religion. No dance is commenced without a prayer  !

The Prayer  :

Guru Brahma, Guru Vishnu,
Guru Devo, Maheswaraha,
Guru Sakshaad, Parambrahma -

Tasmay Shri Guruveh Namaha

Which means -

O Lord Brahma, O Lord Vishnu,
The teacher of the Gods, O Lord Maheshwara,
The Ultimate Teacher, The Ultimate Soul,
I prostrate before you - O teacher  !

The Basic Principles Of All Indian Dances Are  :

Yato Hasta, Stato Drushti  !
Yato Drushti, Stato Manaha  !
Yato Manaha, Stato Bhavom !
Yato Bhavom, Stato Rasaha  !

Which means -

Where hands go, Eyes should follow  !
Where eyes go, Mind should follow  !
Where mind goes, Expression should evolve  !
Where expressions evolve, pleasure will follow !

Some Of The Basic Components Of Indian Classical Dances Are  :

  1. Abhinaya  - Angika, Vachikaabhinaya, Ahaaryabhinaya, Saatvikabhinaya

Abhinaya means the expressional form of dance.  This is found in all classical Indian dances. Abhinaya is also known as  ' Nritya '.  Dance also comprises of a form known as  ' Nritta ' .  This is pure dance.  It essentially features all form of poses.  It generally has no expressions or symbolisms based on expression. The different components of  ' Abhinaya '  can be explained as -

Angika -  In this, the danseuse uses all parts of her body to convey the meaning of the dance with  ' Hastamudras ' ( hand gestures ), ' Mandis ' ( Postures ), and her own walk.

Vachikabhinaya - This is the vocal and instrumental compositions which accompany the danseuse.

Aharyabhinaya - This comprises of dance preparations like costume, make up, accessories, sets etc.

Satvikabhinaya - This comprises of a psychological exposition by the danseuse mainly thru' eye movements and her own moods and self. She does this by virtually getting into the skin of the character that she is presenting.
