Since I have been in AA I have heard a lot of good ones, However I recently heard a couple of zingers. 1. As you sober up the stinking thinking doesn't go away, but it sure gets clearer. 2. For an alkie to pick up a drink is like jumping off a 25 story building. The first one doesn't do much for you. So as you pass the 15th floor you take another one. Then it's free fall all the way to the bottom.

I always discard the paper cover to my Big Book and write notes on the inside of the hardcover -- quotes from the text or stories, and what pagethey can be found on. Also what page each step is introduced on. In my current Big Book, I decided to use the inside of the back for a list of things Heard At A Meeting. I'm really glad I started this. Sometimes a member says something that might not appear anywhere in the book, but which changes my way of thinking about a topic or gives me insight. Often it's through humor. I tend not to be able to remember the profound or funny things I hear in meetings, which is always a disappointment, so this turned out to be a good exercise for me.

Said by an old time at a meeting in Lakeland, Florida............. "We can get off the elevator of alcoholism at any point, we don't have to wait until it crashes to the ground" And...this wasn't said at a meeting, but well worth sharing....on one of my "bad days" with living with my inlaws my husband told me "Ignore Ignorance".

I've always liked this. It came from a guy who struggles with recovery and seems to be unable to find a handle he can live with. He said, after one of his recent treatment completions, the following: "I feel like I've got the keys to Disneyland...it might rain once in a while, but it's still Disneyland." I'm not sure of all the ramifications of that sentiment or what twists and turns can be wrought from it but he oozed sincerity when he said it. I hope I never forget it.

My name is Deidre and I am a sober, happy and very grateful alcoholic! I picked up my first drink at the age of 14 and I drank heavily right up until I was 40 years old. Tried to give up drinking on my own on many occasions and failed miserably and went back to drinking every time. I tried numerous rehabilitation centres and also failed. I tried to go to A.A. meetings on a regular basis, but still drank in between. I sought psychiatric help to no avail. In the end I got that depressed because of my drinking I wanted to end my life. I was recommended by my doctor to investigate the Fresh Start program. So I thought to myself “I have got nothing to lose, why not give it a try”. I subsequently joined the Fresh Start program and had the surgical naltrexone implant put into the lower part of my abdomen, which was a minor and painless operation. This implant instantly took away the cravings of alcohol, which in turn stopped me from thinking about alcohol. 18 months later I am still alcohol free! I have not picked up a drink since. The desire to drink has ceased physically and mentally. As a result I am back with my husband and 2 boys, and life couldn’t be better! I am now experiencing life sober beyond my wildest dreams. If you or a friend or a family member have an alcohol problem that you can’t control, please visit the Fresh Start Private website – www.freshstartprivate.com, I guarantee you won’t regret it, there is a success rate of 7000 people who have received the implant to my knowledge! I wish you all the luck that I had with this. Cheers, Dee xx

And one more thing; none of us would be here today if somebody hadn't taken time to explain things to us, to give us a little pat on the back, to take us to a meeting or two, to have done numerous little kind and thoughtful acts in our behalf. So let us never get the degree of smug complacency so that we're not willing to extend or attempt to, that help which has been so beneficial to us, to our less fortunate brothers.
