| How to make the chain. At this point we want to figure out if we want to just do the Traditional Method of Tatting or learn the Front Side Back Side Tatting. In traditional Tatting, we just do the chains with the double stitches as we did in the ring. But as you will see the stitches look differently on chain and ring. In Front Side Back Side Tatting, what we have to do is make the stitches on the chains in reverse order. So we would do the Second half first and then the first half secondly. Front/Back Side puts all the doubles stitches on one side of the tatted piece. So if you want to see the difference, Click Here and decide which you want to learn.
If not continue down to the Tutorial here on the Traditional Method. Click Here to see a way of wrapping the pinkie thread to help if the chain gets to tight on your hand. This is a good method if your doing really long chains. | | Once you have your ring made and closed, rw by just flipping the ring over to the other side. (Note for Needle Tatters. Do not do the usual rw, just flip the ring over to the other side.) Your ball thread will be out to the left and your shuttle to the right. Pinching the ring between your thumb and forefinger, take the ball thread over the back of your hand, and anchor it on your pinkie. Make the double stitches in the same manner as you did on the ring, making sure the thread does the flip. Make a chain of 3ds - 3ds | |
| Shape the chain and it should look like this. Now this is the traditional method of Tatting and as you see it looks like you only have 2 doubles stitches on the ring, and 3 on the chain. But when you flip it over you have 3 ds's on the ring and it looks like only 2 on the chain. Now this is where you might want to check out the tut. for Front/Back Side Tatting and see which one you prefer to learn. Again not everyone is that concerned with how it looks, but you need to figure which method you like best. | Click Here to continue on to see how to Make the next ring and joining to the previous ring.
