The Josephine Knot is just the first or second half of the double stitch, repeated for a number of times. Here the ring is 12 first half of the double stitch. It's best not to over do the stitches used for a ring, as it will want to twist. These rings are made normally for decoration and not used for joining.

The chain is also made with 12 half stitches and as you make either the first or second half of the double stitch the chain will start to twist.
The chain is best made with a few at a time, get them to twist and do more as you work the chain.
