Sometimes you may come across a pattern for working rings only and the thread cut off the ball. These can be used in doily patterns, and also for edgings.
Wind the shuttle as normal, but cut the thread off the ball. Do a normal wrap of the hand as in the ring/chain method, and make your double stitches.
1st ring made with 3ds-3ds-3ds-3ds CL
The length of thread in between is usually just 1/4" or so from one ring to the other.
Make the next ring as required: Here I did, 6ds-6ds-6ds-6ds Cl.
To get to the next small ring turn your work up so the tail is on your left, (see photo) you see the shuttle thread is now on the right.

Here you see the 1st, 2nd and 3rd rings made.
Now turn the work up again so your tail is again on the left and shuttle on the right, so your in position to start the next large ring.

1st small ring, 2nd large, 3rd another small ring, and 4th another large ring.
Now we turn the work once again, so the tail is again on the left and shuttle on the right.
You would continue back and forth in the same manner for length desired.
