Split Rings are great for branching out of a pattern. You will need to use two shuttles for doing this. The basics are making half of the ring with shuttle one normal manner. Then using Shuttle two (2) and making the other half on the opposite side of the hand thread, and without making the thread flip, so it just slides along the hand thread. (Keep your fingers spread, so the thread is real taunt so you do not get that flip.)
Once you learn the basic split, you may want to try them using two colors/two shuttles to make your rings more interesting. Click Here for Tut. on Two Colors.

Here you will see the first 3ds coming from the last chain made, and joined to the picot and 3 more ds's made, on top of the hand thread. This is the first half of the split ring.
Then on the thread that is on the palm of the hand, you make the other half of the Ring, doing the stitches in reverse order and not making the flip. The thread would just slide down to the base of the ring, by the chain. (Spread your fingers and keep your hand thread real taunt, so the thread does not flip.)

Now you can also turn the work around and put the palm thread on your hand the other way, and do the ds's, on the top. This is just an option as I find it easier to do.
Most patterns will read:
R 3 +(join) 3 / 3 - 3
When you see the slash that refers to do the split in that order.

In just doing a ring without joining it you may see it as:
R 3 - 3 /3 - 3
or
R 3ds p 3ds / 3ds p 3ds

Either way, you make the other half by doing in reverse order the 3ds - 3ds,
This is the finished half's, and by pulling on Sh 1 thread it will close the ring at the top.

Here you can see the finished split ring.

Now a Mock Picot will have to be made to either do your next ring or chain as you branch out into the next round. Here I will be continuing with a chain to show how to do a split chain.
The mock picot is made the sizes of the other regular picots. By doing a un-flipped stitch and then a flipped stitch. Or vice versa. These are something you can play around with and see which you like best.

Continue to next page for how to on the Split Chain.

Once you've learned the basic Split Ring, you might want to try using Two Colors/Two Shuttles and make your rings different colors. Click Here
