1977 & 1978 Trans Ams are nearly identical in outward appearance. The diagrams above give two quick ways to tell the difference.
The black tail light bezels on the 1978 Trans Am were a prelude to the all black or smoked tail light lenses soon to appear on the 1979 model. If I'm not mistaken, some early 1978 Trans Ams had body color matching tail light bezels like the 1977 model, so make sure to confirm which headlight bezel style is on the car. Better yet, check the VIN.
There are a few other major items which an unaltered 1977 Trans Am will NOT have. One is Snowflake wheels which are 8" wide (deep dish look). Another is a 3/4" (.750") rear sway bar. These were WS6 package items and 1978 was the first year for WS6.
