GERMS - 2

Microorganisms and volatile organic compounds in airborne dust from damp residences (ADDED 9/20/04)
Airborne dust samples from damp (n = 9) and control (n = 9) residences were analyzed for microorganisms (molds and bacteria), bacterial markers (3-hydroxy fatty acids and muramic acid), and adsorbed volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The number of mold species was greater in the damp residences than in the controls (23 vs.18) and nine mold species were found only in damp residences. Identifications made by culture and microscopy of the major molds found, i.e. Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Penicillum, coincided with the identification of VOCs known to be produced by these species. A number of additional VOCs irritating to the skin, eyes, or respiratory tract were also found.(Source: Indoor Air;  April 2004 )

Is Hidden Mold at Home Making You Sick? (ADDED 9/21/04)

Because modern homes are constructed more tightly sealed for energy, efficiency and water, all of  which mold needs to survive. Mold has also been known to thrive on several home appliances such as clothes dryers
and dishwashers.Experts said a relatively small amount of  mold species have been identified as producing mycotoxin, a type of toxin that has not  yet been proven to be toxic to human beings. Visual warning signs of
mold:  Signs of water intrusion--discoloration, peeling or bubbling paint A musty smell  Persistent physical symptoms such as sneezing, runny noses, red eyes and skin rashes When to call a mold inspector:  When you
discover a musty smell, but can’t find visual evidence of it  When you find visual evidence and need to assess the extent of the damage Dr. Mercola's ,"  In my clinical experience, I have found both fish oil and cod liver oil have helped reduce allergic responses by enhancing the immune system and soothing irritated mucous membranes. If you take cod liver oil, it is important to remember to get your vitamin D levels tested. Although most Americans’ vitamin D levels are far less than  optimal, it is possible to overdose on vitamin D, particularly during the spring and summer months when you’re already getting vitamin D naturally from the sun.Another recommendation I give to allergy sufferers is to purchase an air purifier. This is a simple way to reduce your exposure to potential allergens found in both your home and work environment"

Infection control of lung function equipment  (ADDED 9/21/04)

Infection control of lung function equipment: a practical approach  The degree of risk of cross-infection of patients via lung function testing equipment has yet to be quantified. Based on current evidence, elaborate precautions are not justified for the majority of patients  attending the laboratory, but attention to appropriate routine cleaning
and disinfection protocols is important.Disinfection and sterilization can be achieved by a variety of methods, although chemical methods should be used with caution. Identification of factors increasing the susceptibility or infectivity of particular patients is important in determining appropriate precautions. Where patients are known to be
infectious or are immuno-compromized, additional precautions such as using a barrier filter may be appropriate. (Source: Respiratory Medicine  November 2003)
