Our Method, and the factors which influence it

Travellers are generally less politicised than the settled community and have often had very negative experiences of dealing with statutory agencies. They have largely remained dependant on these agencies and have been very much on the margins of Irish society. Therefore to encourage Travellers to be activists is a very long process and can be very strange for Travellers. The TVG has developed into an organisation which is well structured, very organised, accountable, pro-active and professional in its work. This is very different than the traditional Traveller way of organising around work, which is more spontaneous, responsive and less long-term in the way that actions are planned. Lastly, the TVG uses a community development model of work, and has organisational structures and practices which reflect this model. For Travellers, and for settled people who previously worked out of a charitable model with Travellers, this is new and challenging. The TVG works from a collective model and is geared towards seeing people and working with people in a collective way. This differs from the traditional Traveller way of organising around the extended family. It also differs from the traditional State agency approach which was to deal with individual cases rather than taking a collective approach.
