Start Here >> The Work We Do >> Primary Health Care One of the main pieces of work of the TVG for the last two years has been the Cork City Traveller Primary Health Care training programme. This programme involves literacy, numeracy, community development, personal development and communication skills, followed by basic health care, early identification of health risk factors, and self-check skills. A total of 16 Traveller women are involved in this course, leading to a qualification in Community Health Care. Following the lead of the EHB four years ago, the Health Service Executive will fund a number of these women to be employed as Community Health Workers, when the programme is launched at the end of their training, probably in 2007. Cork City Traveller Primary Health Care Project is jointly co-ordinated by the Health Service Executive and the Traveller Visibility Group, with funding and support from the Traveller Health Unit and the Vocational Education Committee. The establishment of the programme follows from the adoption of the National Traveller Health Strategy.
