This web site has opened so many possibilities and contacts for the TVG that as an organisation, we have become much more conscious of the potential of the internet in our work.
During the summer of 2004 we signed a contract with Irish Broadband for high speed access to the internet, with access speeds touching 1000 Kbps. This means that downloading large documents takes no more than seconds. Four PCs are now networked to access this broadband service.
Our next objective is to set up our own internet domain which means we can transfer all of the contents of this web site to our own web space. This present web site is free, which is why you see so many advertisements above the pages.
All staff now have their own e-mail addresses, which cuts down significantly on the need to print and circulate messages. This development meant that every staff member had to learn to become computer literate. Although most staff had some basic training in computer use, this speeded up the learning, with several in-house informal training sessions organised between staff.
We have recognised the danger of multiple users of the internet downloading viruses. To reduce the risk of viruses, we have transferred all e-mail addresses to the web-based Hotmail system. This ensures that virus-infected messages are blocked from reaching our computers. This protection has not yet extended to blocking dialer, adware and spyware programmes, but for now we are enjoying our virus free status!
Recently we set up an interactive message board to cover the issues affecting Travellers. The purpose of this board would be to allow commentary and exchange of ideas between users from different parts of the country, without having to travel long distances to achieve this. Access to the message board is by invitation only, to prevent abuse by those with racist inclination.
