Volunteer work in the Traveller Visibility Group

The work we do is really diverse, and appeals to many different types of person. At present, the success of our work depends on the commitment of several volunteers on our management committee, but also in programme work. Even though we do not have formal volunteer recruitment, more and more of our work is carried out by people with skills and commitment.

Work already completed by volunteers includes:

  • Nomadism research, to report on the likely number of families who will need transient facilities each month of an average year. This is necessary to help plan the necessary number of temporary and full time transient sites. Volunteers: P.J. Brennan and Colm O Ceallachain, both students of social work in UCC.
  • Management of equality files / incident report files. Volunteer: Breda Desmond.
  • Creation of an extensive photo library depicting contemporary issues related to Travellers. Volunteer: Daithi mac an Bhiocaire.
  • Librarianship support to bring order to our growing library resource. This work was completed in 2004 and has been computerised, so that when we move to our new premises this resource will be available to the public, researchers, and students. Volunteer: Rosanna Croce, an Italian artist and librarian referred to us through CILA.

Current work being carried out by volunteers includes:

  • Support for Travellers who face eviction, and advocacy work with the local authorities on the families' behalf.
  • Legal advice, on a range of issues.
  • Advocacy work with nomadic Travellers, to encourage them to seek legal accommodation on transient sites in Cork for the weeks they spend in the city each year.
  • Halting site and Group Housing Scheme design, to involve site residents in planning their own accommodation. In the past, Cork City Council has designed Group Housing Scheme developments which were unsuitable as Traveller accommodation. This approach is one in which the Travellers are driving the design, rather than following it.

 New volunteers are needed:

If you think you have what it takes, why not come in and have a chat. The present "vacancies" include:

  • Article writers for feature articles in magazines. The articles are to do with every aspect of Traveller life. The information is available in TVG, but the time to write copy, and offer it to magazine editors is not. If you fancy your skills in journalism, why not give us a call?
  • Newsletter Producer. This includes layout, interviewing people for articles, photography, everything really.
  • Webmaster. This web site is updated only two or three times a year, by people who have no training or experience. Can you do better?
  • Incident Reporter. Every week, incidents occur which go no further because they are unrecorded. Can you respond to a request to visit somebody who has an incident to relate?
  • Researchers. Every year we carry out research into various aspects of Travellers’ lives, as part of our role of policy development.
  • Legal advisors. We are always willing to meet new students or law practitioners. In particular, we are interested in hearing from practitioners who are prepared to work pro bono over an extended period to analyse allegations of human rights abuses against Travellers by various parties, with a view to litigation.

If you want to know more, drop in, give us a call at 021 4503786, or email us at tvgcork@gmail.com

Thank you.
