Sleeping Pad

A sleeping pad will make his nights more comfortable and will insulate him from the ground (very important when it is cold out). Many people purchase comercial pads like "Ridge Rest" or "Z-Rest". 

The cheapest way to go is to get a piece of closed-cell foam that is just as big as his bag (the blue closed cell foam is often nicknamed "Smurf Sidewalk"). A group of scouts could get together and buy a roll of foam cheaply and cut it to size.

Self inflating air pads are nice and the best is the foam and air "Thermarest" styled pads.
