The 2007 Reunion- Return to Home Port
This year the USS Albemarle/USNS Corpus Christi Bay Reunion will be in Norfolk, Virginia from May 20-22. It was 20 years ago that the first reunion was held by the Albemarle sailors and since 2002 the soldiers of the Corpus Christi Bay have been part of the reunion. This year the theme is "Return to Home Port" as Norfolk was home to the Albemarle. This year’s location is a good one because Norfolk is a day’s drive for much of the country’s population. The area is full of history- Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, and more. The area is full of good food, and there are great restaurants close to the hotel, which is the Radisson, where we have a good group rate at $89/night.
Although Norfolk is Home Port for the Albemarle, nearby is Ft. Eustis, where many of the Corpus Christi Bay crew taught and trained, and many returned to live in the Tidewater area. Although not part of the reunion, a quick trip to Eustis could be made on Tuesday of the reunion, where there is plenty of spare time. We may even try to get a bus for those interested in returning.
Last year saw a lot of growth in the Association, partly because of the reunion in Corpus Christi. All of the first timers enjoyed it and plan to come this year, if possible. I’ve never heard anyone tell me that they were disappointed in the reunion. So here is another opportunity to see your buddies after all those years. We’ve all changed, but much of us has stayed the same, including those memories of our friendships.
On the web page, you will find a registration form for the reunion, including my email and phone number, in case of questions. The Radisson Hotel phone number is 757.627.5555 for reservations; tell them you are with the Albemarle/Corpus Christi Bay Reunion for the group rate. The rate holds for two days before and after the reunion, to give you more time for touring.
The brief schedule of events is:
Sunday, May 20: Registration and Hospitality Room
Monday, May21: Memorial Service, Harbor Tour/buffet lunch, botanical gardens
Tuesday, may 22: Business meeting, free time and evening banquet
And the rest is filled in with hospitality, dinners with buddies and spouses, catching up with old friends, making new friends, pictures, videos and memories.
