Mustang wrestlers, Jeff Werden (photo right) and Ian Patton won gold medals in their respective weight divisions to lead the team to an overall third place team finish at the McMaster Invitational Men’s Wrestling Tournament in Hamilton. Werden, a third year Kinesiology student from Petrolia, defeated Montreal’s Gabriel Choupke in the 54 kg division final in two rounds, 3-1 and 4-0 in the best of three two-minute rounds. “Jeff wrestled really well today”, commented coach, Josip Mrkoci. “He was able to penetrate with his leg attacks and make quick transitions to finishing options before his opponent could defend. He was clearly the best mustang performer of the day.” Teammate and mustang co-captain, Ian Patton won the heavy-weight division (130 kg) defeating Eric Bertrus (Queen’s) by pin in the second round. Patton controlled the match, but wasn’t totally satisfied in the win. “I need to be more aggressive and will work on attacking more next time.” The mustangs collected three bronze medals along with three additional top six place finishes. London Laurier SS graduate, Andrew Ross won a well earned bronze at 65 kg, while London Lucas SS graduate, Mohammed El Naggar took the 76 kg bronze over teammate Steven Ko who defaulted due to injury. Engineering student, Vi Nguyen-Huu won the mustangs third bronze at 82 kg pinning Guelph’s David Brunskill. “It was a good first tournament for the men” said, Mrkoci. Wrestling action continues with the women’s divisions held Sunday November 5. The women mustangs, who were OUA silver team medalists, expect tough competition from defending OUA champions, Brock University and two top US programs, the University of the Cumberlands of Kentucky and Missouri.
