Wrestling Results – Ontario Junior Championships, Hamilton, January 30, 2005

Mustang, Adam Phillips wins GOLD at the Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships in the 74 kg weight class.  Phillips, a 1st year King’s student defeated Matt Sparling of Guelph in the final in likely the most competitive weight class with no fewer than four provincial champions.  “Adam is a very consistent wrestler,” said coach Ray Takahashi.  “He has a good leg attack, but is also strong in upper-body wrestling, especially on the counter-attack.”  London-Western teammate Matt Steele placed 2nd at 55 kg while 1st year Kinesiology student, Jeff Werden placed 5th in the same weight class.  London-Western placed 3rd overall with 20 points, edging 4th place Brock who finished with 19 points.  Lakehead wrestling club took the team title with 32 points, while Hamilton wrestling club placed 2nd with 24 points.  Mustang, James Dooley placed 4th at 120 kg.

Laura Skopelianos and Seren Martin win GOLD at the Ontario Junior Wrestling Championships.  Jill McCallum takes SILVER, for overall 2nd place finish.

Mustang, Laura Skopelianos defeated Stephanie Toffan (Mariposa Wrestling Club) in an exciting match after dropping the first period but coming back to win two straight in the 51 kg weight class.  The 2nd year Kinesiology student and defending Junior National champion at 48 kg was thrown by Toffan in the first period but changed her tactics to avoid Toffan’s throws who twice beat Skopelianos two years ago.  Coach Ray Takahashi said, “Skopelianos is a tough competitor and wrestled tactically smart to control the wrists and avoid the close tie-up position.”  Skopelianos’ last match was against teammate Breanne Beh of London-Western who placed 4th.   Western’s other gold medal performance was at 72 kg, when mustang, Seren Martin defeated Brock’s Jocelyn Dresser, but not without a scare when Martin found herself bridging from her back while time ran out in the first period.  Martin, came back in the second, winning two straight periods in the best of three format.
